They're going to need conquest sales and that will be extremely difficult if pricing isn't lower than the already proven Tacoma. I want these to be a success but GM hasn't proven themselves in the mid size truck market.

![]() As I've said, GM's hurdle here isn't the small Japanese competitors, it's the full size segment. The previous truck was not a champ by any means. I remember a meeting when we were told the greatest thing about the Colorado/Canyon was were going to lose a whole lot less money on them. But the engineering was supposed to be done by Isuzu as I recall and GM pulled the US version back and delayed the program for a year to make the truck better than the global version. You have to remember Toyota has a crappy version of the Tacoma sold elsewhere in the world. It's the Hi Lux I believe. The issue always was for a few thousand more you get a full size that had only a few MPG worse FE. Plus it was frankly a much crappier truck than the full size. So GM has to make it acceptable to buy small. 26 mpg for the V6 isn't nearly enough. Dodge is leading in FS FE with 25 today and I have said I believe the new Ford will equal or beat that. But I also believe that Dodge is a $30,000 truck. The Silverado is $5,000 more than a Colorado. And it gets 24 MPG with the 4.3 L V6. So right now the play is simply that it's "cheaper". And now it's more than a "few thousand" like it used to be. But if you can buy a Ford F150 that gets BETTER FE for only it's only a "few thousand more"................. The Colorado needs to simply be a great product. Not just a smaller, cheaper alternative to the full size. Starts to sound like the last game GM lost and the clock hasn't even started yet.

Same thing here. Wait for the discounts then compare to the silverado. Also GM absolutely has to compete against the Tacoma an Frontier. Notice how the Tacoma sells in huge numbers? I don't see Toyota complaining that the Tudra is stealing sales from the Tacoma despite "only being a few grand more with a little (in some cases the same) fuel efficiency" Your forgetting that there are a number of people who do not want a full size truck regardless of the price or FE. That's who GM (and Toyota and Nissan) are aiming at. I remember when sales of the new silverado lagged everyone calle it a failure but as soon as the 2013 inventory ofthe last gen was depleted and the discounts started rolling in, sales picked right back up to the point where I see more new silverados then old. I predict the same will happen with the canyon and Colorado.

Sure, the truck still might need to "prove" itself or whatever, but that doesn't mean its not worth the Toyota's price. The reason the Tacoma has such a high resale value is because its the most sought after midsize truck, and that's b/c the competition just isn't there. These are the buyers that don't want fullsize and will pay the premium price to have a decent truck that they can fit in their garage. Later on, once we get closer to MY15 year end, if GM is willing to deal on these trucks, Toyota is going to have to deal as well, as I hear right now they don't offer much incentives at all on the Taco.

I agree with you on all of that. But did you really expect any better than 26mpg for the V6?? I don't see how you could have. We know what this V6 gets in other cars, and the midsize SUVs. Honestly, I think 26 equals or even beats the FE rating in the V6 equinox, does it not? So 26 is acceptable. Expecting 28+ is just unreasonable....not without other technologies added to this drivetrain that would make a big difference (like electric, or cylinder shut off). But the way, the 4.3 ecoTech has cylinder shut off. The LFX does not. Still beats it. 8 speed will likely bring it up to 27. Past that, GM would have had to neuter this truck low tow/haul capabilities to make it lighter, or something, to get any better than that. The next V6 called the LGX, will probably end up in this truck as well in a year or two. I'm sure it will only help with MPGs, especially if it has a 4 cylinder mode....now your looking at possibly a 28mpg highway V6 truck. But coming back to the present...26 mpg is not bad at all. I don't think your giving the truck a chance. Its using a proven, good engine and transmission, and using a Silverado like boxed frame. I think everything looks good on paper, and the quality of this truck should go well beyond the 1st gen mid size trucks. For my money, even it was "only 2 or 3 grand difference, my money goes to the mid size truck. Quote:
Although there have already been some 30 - 40 thousand orders come in the for the mid size trucks....that's seems extremely healthy to me. There is good interest in this truck.

For the Colorado/Canyon to succeed it needs to be a great truck first but then provide a truly compelling reason to not buy a full size that gets the same or better FE.

The bed has all kinds of great options with dividers and tie downs, but they left out the tool box like on previous Colorado's. I always liked the OEM version better than aftermarket ones.

I think 26 on the Hwy is great for this truck with the V6. Also I remember when I had a Full size truck and no matter how easy I drove it on the Hwy I never got the actual Hwy Epa Number ever and that's at 55mph on mostly Flat roads. I think the Colorado will easily achieve this in real world driving and maybe beable to beat it. And I think this will also steal some saies from Jeep wrangler cause they don't tow that much 2000 to 3500 max is all that is recommended.

I think they'll have it eventually. It was listed as an option when the truck was first announced.
