I honestly think this is a much better buy than the dell.

We have an xps 8100. I bought in 2010, but I have to mess with it because it's not working. Or the monitor isn't working. It turns on, the monitor is on, but can't get video signal. And I upgraded the video card in 2012

Would any external DVD drive be good?

If its necessary, it will work just perfectly fine. But both the HP and Asus I linked above have an optical drive internally according to their spec sheet. They have better specs than the dell, a newer processor, and are also cheaper.

21" screen makes it even harder to be anything more than a desktop. Lol. I thought the xps 18 was big. Lol

21 inches is small compared to dual 24 inch monitors.

we keep going back to the xps 18. mainly because it seems to be big enough for home use, and small enough for traveling. There will be times when we will go to the east coast, and it would be nice to carry a computer/tablet so she can still do her school work. The 13 and 15 inch macs just seem too small, still. Still need to go to the stores and look around though.

If you are interested in mobility, why don't you just get a laptop and then connect it to the screen you guys already have while at home? In reality though, the XPS18 with the i5 has comparable specs to the 13 inch Retina MacBook. The MacBook has newer and longer lasting hardware though

thing about a laptop, is most can get hot when on your lap, or on the bed. I know being mobile is important for Nicole. This way I can be playing the xbox or watching football, and she can go into the bedroom and do school work. I still like the surface pro 3. Screen is still small...such a tough choice. lol

The Surface Pro 3 still gets hot with any heavy multi tasking in my opinion and I wouldn't recommend it as a main device. The only thing that I have against a strictly mobile device is that it will have the power of a mobile device and if you plan on keeping multiple windows, internet browsing tabs, and programs open then it will really feel like a mobile device.

Really it will all boil down to how you want to use the device and that is a question that really only Jewel can answer. I feel like the XPS18 is a good option, I just think it is a little overpriced for what it is. But if it is suits your needs then it might just be the right device. You guys should definitely go and see it first though. I know they have it at the BestBuy here in Tallahassee.
