Highway death rate per 100,000miles traveled was a lot higher back in the day.
Besides unsafe cars, a lot of two lane roads, road designs, fixed objects and attitudes towards DUI was a big part of that.

I try and guide people to that youtube Vid on the reg when I hear people say oh your much safer in a old car they were solid and didn't break easily. Then they come back and say OMG I cant believe that.
