Can you say "Paranoid"... or perhaps involved in illegal activity (then The Man is already watching you!) LOL
As for me, when my OnStar subscription terminates and I choose not to contine, I'll simply tell them to completely disconnect and discontinue the monitoring. But wait... They lied and are watching me. Aaaaaaaaaaaaah |

Contrary to popular belief, unless the insurance company knows FOR SURE you are doing something bad they don't have the time or resources to spend hunting down and reviewing every single policy holder. I know this because I used to work for one of the big ones. Trust me when I tell you the place is filled with employees running around with their hair on fire because there is not enough hours in the day to do the normal stuff let alone go on a "fishing expedition". At best the insurance companies will be sending this data to their actuarial department for review of geographical areas and may increase or decrease rates based on accidents, traffic, etc. What makes it better than their normal data is it covers a larger and more mixed group than just their policyholders who in some cases maybe they just insure a lot of people in a specific town/area, or their policyholders are more accident prone in an area.

TAKE OFF THE TINFOIL HAT
First off there is a thread about this, secondly they are not monitoring your speed and location live to go tattletale on you. Thirdly it says specifically its for marketing purposes and statistics. Seriously people need to stop this crap.

Signed - a customer who cancelled OnStar today. P.S. More than likely, you probably partake in illegal activity everyday... ever drive more than 1 mph over the speed limit?

Are they still tracking anything even if you let the subscription expire?

>because a large dataset like this has never been available.
BS! can you say Terabyte? There are numerous companies that specialize in product scoring and some of them are updating 300 million records / transactions a day! What are you writing software in DOS? All Onstar is doing is going after the metadata, like thousands of other companies are today.

Yes, I am writing DOS applications, 6.22 even!!!! Seriously, if you don't have anything constructive to add to the thread, please don't reply. And no, it's not just the "metadata" as you stated. Right from the updated terms: "The information we may collect from your Vehicle includes: • information about your Vehicle’s operation, including such things as diagnostic trouble codes, oil life remaining, tire pressure, fuel economy, and odometer readings; • information about crashes involving your Vehicle, including the direction from which your Vehicle was hit, which air bags have deployed, and safety belt usage; • information about your use of the Vehicle and its features, such as whether you have paired a mobile device with your Vehicle; • information about when your Vehicle’s ignition is turned on or off and when your fuel is refilled; and • in the limited circumstances listed below, the location and the approximate speed of your Vehicle based on GPS: • when there is a request for Service (for example, when you request driving directions); • when there is an air bag deployment or automatic crash response (so we can inform emergency Service Providers); • when there is a request for Stolen Vehicle Assistance (to assist law enforcement in the recovery of your Vehicle); • when needed to protect the safety of you or others (for example, to locate a missing person); • when needed by us, or our Service Providers, for our quality, research, or troubleshooting purposes; • as required by OnStar for the delivery of new or enhanced services that you have requested; • as required by law; or • for any purpose, at any time, provided that following collection of such location and speed information identifiable to your Vehicle, it is shared only on an anonymized basis" Last edited by Bobtorious; 09-21-2011 at 02:02 PM. I have seen a few individuals on here that have had the 155 MPH speed limiter put back in. Others have drag raced their vehicle and have been called by ONSTAR. They will talk to police and disable your vehicle, if the cop asks. I have had my ONSTAR HARDWARE rewired and disabled so it doesn't work.. I guess I'll be doing the same to my truck and the wife's car. |
