So this is a question I have always had.

In a right side drive car. Driving a car with a manual transmission, you will obviously shift with your left hand, but when shifting up from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 and so on, do you shift away from you or towards you. I would think it would be away from you.

You would almost think that'd it'd be reversed but it's actually the same as our left hand drive vehicles...

Everything including the pedals is in the same order... I wondered this too...

yup. First is still up left, so you'd start away and shift towards you.

Really, huh, I would have thought it had been the other way. I think that would feel really weird to start shifting towards you, well not that the whole right side drive thing wouldn't be weird as well.

Yeah. Well I look at it this way. Majority of the world drives what? LHD vehicles. I mean very few countries are driving RHD anymore, except for the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and is it also China?

So I'm sure few manufacturers would complete new transmission patterns just for each drive vehicle.

But a couple years back I was on a mission to import like a JDM Mazda FD3 RX7, or a MKIV Supra or a 300ZX twin turbo into the States.... There's a couple good websites like terra2imports.ca that will import JDM cars into Canada for some damn good prices. I was going to buy one for a project car.
It's easy to import one into Canada, but it's almost impossible to import one into the U.S.

Not to mention import charges, taxes, although the tariff rates seemed unusually low. But basically the U.S. doesn't allow anything that's a foreign vehicle that less than 25yrs old to be legally street driven without being converted to LHD, and that could cost more than the car itself to do right there... Anyways I gave up on the idea but I had looked into all of this so thought I'd shed some light...

I live in Canada but lived over 28 years in England. Driven many cars mainly manuals. The gear shifts/positioning are identical as they are over in N.A. It would be catastrophic if it was opposite. Now driving on the right when I came her took a bit of getting used to!! I was forever turning and moving in to the wrong lane lol!!

So this morning I'm looking up one of my all time favorite cars, and came across this. Thanks for the information guys. This verifies what you told me

I still think it would feel reaaaaaly weird to shift towards you. I plan on purchasing this dream car sometime in my life. I'm wondering if I will even be able to drive this thing.
