The larger metro areas in Texas are "non-attainment" areas and require emissions testing for a pass for your inspection report. We don't have inspection stickers anymore, but you have to get an inspection report in order to get your registration renewed. As Gearhead SS mentioned above, the requirement for inspections is going away soon. (Not soon enough, lol) Since we also mentioned front license plates, I used to never have one on my late model Camaros, but since I work on a military base, the sentries were questioning me a bit too much, so I put it back on my ZL1 and my old Chevy truck. My old 79 Camaro is registered as an antique and doesn't have to have a front LP or inspection.
Good luck with your move to Texas! I was born and raised here.

Texas does emissions testing, as far as all cats I have no idea as some do away with all the cats and simply add two high flow and they are good to go.
On a side note you will have to get your car registered before you get your license. It is the weirdest thing. Get your car inspected take that sheet to the local tax office and register your car. Once you do that then go to the license place and you are good to go, bring all your paperwork with you because some of the people at these places feel they have all the authority in the world and they try to catch you on anything they can!! . Please leave the California ideas there!

The two web sites below provide some overview to the state of texas emission policies. This looks pretty liberal to me, as you just have to pass an OBDII hookup. Most states come right out and say somewhere that the vehicle must have all original emissions equipment in place as part of the inspection, but texas doesn't say that!

ACtually had all three of my cars inspected and done in less than an hour last weekend. Apparently this is the last year for said inspections as they voted against it. As far as emissions testing, if they did it during the safety inspection I had no idea because they spent less than 10 minutes on each car.....we get our licenses this weekend.

Just a recap on this whole post.
Safety inspection is gone here in Texas. So tires can be bald, wipers missing, lights not working at all, tint so dark you can't see during the day, all ignored for inspection. Emissions testing is still a thing. 25 years and older no inspection. Diesel and EV no inspection. 24 years and newer gas engine is no check engine light and all but one drive cycle monitor in ready status. Thats all for counties with Emissions testing. Dallas, tarrant, Travis, ones like that. Its very easy to fool. Just tune out cat and evap codes, or run non foulers on your rear o2 sensors. Its still illegal to tint your windshield but i see more now than i ever have. If you dont want to mount your front license plate put it on your dash or do like me and have it between the console And passenger seat to quickly place it on the dash as needed. |

So... Wife and I just bought our retirement home in Denton County last week, we can NOT wait to get the hell out of Commifornia... What are the requirements for this county? Can I register the cars there before they are physically there? (would rather NOT roll in to Texas with "Commifornia" plates if I can avoid it, we aren't from here, just lived here the last 15 years due to my job). Would love to have Texas plates from day 1...
Any input would be appreciated!

No engine lights. You can have 1 monitor not ready. EV no inspection, diesels no inspection, older than 25 years no inspection. Current insurance proof. Your drivers license usually needs to match your address so I'm not 100 percent on how that would affect your situation. This year we started a no paper tag policy which made it a policy for dealers to have license plates on hand. You should be able to wipe the California off of your cars pretty easily. The front license plate is "required", mine is just in between my console and passenger seat. Ive never been stopped for it and my excuse would probably be it was in a accident and my bracket is on backorder right now. I think it's really about how much attention you bring to yourself and what area you are in. |
