Onstar Module Removal Questions

Hello!

I am looking to get some information from some of the members here who removed this module.

I am privacy conscious, and am planning on removing this component before taking her out of storage this year. Finally comfortable enough with the car to start poking at it a little more.

Since I have heard it is a bit, uh, tedious to get access to this component, I'd like to do it "Right" the first time.

- Long story short, who here was able to remove/modify the module and retain compass/bluetooth mic.

I am going to remove the module regardless, but if I can retain the rest of the features somehow, I might as well do it as such.

I've seen some talk about the antenna termination caps and so on, however I also saw some talk about signal leakage.

Just curious as to if anyone has anything else to add to this effort.

Thanks!

My ZL-1 did not have navigation. I took out the OnStar module from beneath the glove box. I followed the instructions on the forum. Not very difficult.

You will lose the compass. It just says "cal" I believe, meaning calibration, instead of N, S, etc. There is also a useless Nav button on the screen.

I still have Bluetooth.

I have no regrets.

All I did was pull the On-star GPS fuse.

Same difference. The Nav module and on-star GPS are one in the same based on what research I've done.

No sat connection no functional nav mode.

This also stops them from uploading your driving habits to insurance companies.

Compass won't work mine just stays at N /shrug

Could you give us the location and number of the fuse please. Something I would like to do.

Here it is:

Be advised though: Pulling this fuse disables the built in hands free microphone in the ceiling on the car.

In the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro SS engine compartment fuse box shown in my diagram, Fuse F20 is the correct 10A fuse for the OnStar/Telematics system.

Also Note: F20 isn't even listed in the standard 2020 Camaro owner's manual—the manual skips from F19 to F21. Which I thought was interesting.

Fuse F20 Details:

Location: Engine compartment fuse block (top center).
Amperage: 10A (Red mini-fuse).
Function: This fuse provides primary battery power to the Telematics Control Module (TCM), which manages the OnStar cellular link and the GPS receiver.

This is how they can track your driving habits that they sell to insurance companies. (Or in this thread's case pulling the On-Star Module I believe has the same effect.)

Bluetooth works, built in car mic does not, compass does not work either.

To the OP the only way to truly do this:

I believe:

Replace the 7/8" LCD with an after market MP3 touchscreen deck unit one that does not tie into On-Star/Telematics system but has its own built in nav function.

If your goal is to deny GM from selling your driving habits to insurance companies.

That is just me guessing based on my knowledge scope, but if there is a car audio electronics expert on these forums feel free to correct me.

I've looked into the aftermarket infotainment option and the choices are certainly few.

I'm trying to retain the in car mic if possible, but I understand that the method used to do this aren't perfect.

Was trying to figure out if anyone did any more research or tinkering.

If you remove the module like I did, you still have bluetooth speaker usage. You will have to also set the clock manually.

Up until very recently this promising, fully OE compatible Android radio was available, but now it shows as sold out: https://www.56camaro.com/product-pag...16-2024-camaro

Interesting, but pricey! Down the line that could certainly be an option if it ever becomes available again.

My OnStar module I believe died.. or a piece of it did. My compass does nothing now, my gauge cluster speed limit signs I used to get showing speed limit of the road I'm on (from the Nav) does nothing. I can no longer connect to my car from my phone app. Onstar buttons are all unlit. I don't care about the OnStar stuff itself but did like the gauge cluster stuff and connecting to my car from my phone. I bought another entire OnStar module but hadn't pulled it apart or attempted to install it as I'm sure the dealer would have to do something as well to program it to my car?
