Twitchy Steering
Hiyall,
I have been fighting this for a couple of years. At first I thought I had been imagining it. My 22 SS 1LE has been getting worse. After several alignments, it goes straight down the road but everyso often is darts to a side on its own and I am correcting it. In any of the three settings. Tour, sport, and track. Anyone else have something like this? It is as if it has its own mind. I have been thinking it could be the steering angle sensor or the ESC module. I have no idea where the steering computer may be hiding. It could be the rack as well. I have not had a chance to see if there is any corrosion anywhere. Though everything seems to be tight and not any loose or worn suspension pieces. Where would I find the steering angle sensor? Is it under the wheel or someplace lower on the steering. I would like to solve this before ei starting g putting some higher rate springs on it. Tnx for your thoughts. G |

What kind of tires do you have on it? Is it happening when you hit uneven pavement or following something like a crack in the road that follows your direction of travel? Some will tramline like crazy over variations in pavement or cracks like that and dart all over the place. On my GT350 the Michelin Pilot Super Sports tramlined horribly and followed every crack in the road. When I replaced the tires with something else it almost completely went away.

Does it happen when the road is uneven? Our cars follow dips/grooves in the road like a train. It's the width of the front tires, which are pretty wide in an SS 1LE. I'm still on the stock SC3 so I can't comment, but some have said that different tires can be better.

it is the road. When I get in a rut from semi truck wear, you can hardly get out of it.

Sorry, it is neither the tires, road surface, or grooves. It does it on very smooth roads as well.
It is either the angle sensor or the computer, or corrosion someplace. Tnx L |

I don't know, on brand new concrete, I can make a sandwich, change tv channels, pour a cup of coffee, and then eat the sandwich and my car never veers off course

Yup this is why. You have 2 different tread patterns. Front and Rear Same thing happened to me. Had the Goodyear SC up front and needed to replace the rears Goodyears and got Firehawk Indy 500's. So I had Goodyears up front and Firehawks in the back. It would do the same thing you described where it would just become twitchy and unstable especially at high speeds. I only let it last a week like that. I replaced my front Goodyears with Firehawks same as rear and the problem went away. I recommend getting Nittos with same pattern as rears for front or getting Goodyear SC for the rear. Basically you need the same tread pattern on all four corners with these caliber of cars or it will become dangerously unstable and feel possessed with a mind of its own. Good luck friend, time to break out the wallet. ![]() Edit: You've been fighting this for years? OH LAWD! a google search would have told you how dangerous it is to run different tread patterns front and rear on these caliber of cars. You also risk hydroplaning when it rains. Now you know how to fix it bro.

If your 1LE is a 6 spd manual I have the solution. You should have gotten a SS!
Mine has low miles and I ordered it before the 1LE was offered . We could swap!? What ya think?
