Driveshaft failed so replace with stock or aftermarket...

So, you may already know from my earlier post on my build thread. I snaped my new Driveshaft Shops 3.25" 1-Piece Carbon Fiber drive shaft in half today. Damage to anything else looks minimal if not NONE! I'm still not sure why it failed. I had the BMR Rear Cradle Lockout and Busing kit installed at the time the driveshaft was install. That's required by DSS for warranty, so it must be important! I know this could be partly based on opinion. But, you guys with builds that have +824rwhp, what driveshaft are you running? Is the stock DS still ok to run at +824rwhp, or is carbon fiber, chrome molly, aluminum etc. required and what size 3.25" or 3.5"? I just don't want to ever go through this again ! Thanks in advance!

I'm still running the OEM driveshaft, I give it hell on my setup, but I don't track it.

Carbon fiber driveshafts are not ideal from what I remember. They delaminate or something like that.

Well you know how bullet proof the ultimate aftermarket driveshaft is….. put the stock driveshaft back in it, and get a proper driveshaft safety loop.

Driveshaft

I have a DSS chromoly drive shaft in mine. I've put a couple hundred + 1/4 hits on it and about 8000 street miles.

Never been impressed with DSS driveshafts. Too many have failed that I've seen. I ran a QA1 carbon fiber driveshaft with my 892whp Hellcat for 3 1/2 years and never had a single issue.

Agreed. After reading all the DSS horror stories I won’t use their products. My brother has run some of their stuff over the years and the support after the sale is terrible.

On the flip side, everyone that I’ve see run QA1 loves theirs.

aluminum one here in my zle, I have a PST carbon shaft in my race car however its 2600 lbs with me in so the forces it sees are much different, PST says the only way theirs tend to fail is from rubbing. Glad it didn't tear up anything when it failed (as its designed to).

Man ! It's such a decision, I only want to be doing this once and for the last time! I've read a lot of good stuff about QA1 DS's... but, now I'm getting wherry of Carbon Fiber. I guess I can't let a bad experience of a bad product, ruin it forever for me! Do I just put the stock one back in and forget about it or is 800+rwhp too much for that ??? UGH !

Tons of stock ZL1s on 800 WHP. It’s a much improved DS over the version the SS cars got.

I wouldn’t let your experience with DSS taint your view of carbon fiber. If DSS will warranty it then I’d go that route again. If they act like they usually do when supporting customers and tell you to pound sand then go for the QA1. But you can definitely run the OEM ZL1 DS without losing sleep over it.

Sorry this happened to you, but luckily no further damage was done. A lot of people recommend the Gulf Coast Driveshaft as a reliable alternative. I don't have personal experience with them myself, but after doing some research, this is what I would choose. I've read plenty of great feedback and positive experiences from folks in the Facebook LT4 group. Their shafts are known for handling high horsepower and torque well, especially in drag racing setups. Definitely worth considering if you're looking for something durable and proven.

I met Mallory (screenshot below) at Cadillac Attack in Orlando, and she is definitely not babying her ZL1.

And sadly, I don't think QA1 makes one for the ZL1. I think they do make one for the SS. Not sure if they're interchangeable though. Quite a few people ran them in the Hellcat community and we all know those cars weight a LOT more than a 6th Gen Camaro. I only know of one that broke, but it wasn't the carbon fiber that broke, it was the adhesive that held it to the yoke and when the customer contacted QA1, they replaced it for free no questions asked and wanted the original driveshaft back to analyze it. That helped them find out they had a bad batch of adhesive in one of their batches and they contacted the customer to let them know why it failed. VERY professional company.

Z OH 6 - I think your right, I confirmed the SS will not fit correctly the ZL1, they are not interchangeable. It might be a spacing issue?

I did get the rear broken piece removed last night, wear long sleeved shit and gloved when working with a broken CF part. I feel like I have microscopic fibers of CF in my skin, arms and hands and it's really annoying. This CF DS is only 4mm thick! and is crazy light weight. I have started the process with support where I purchased the drive shaft from and hopefully they can/will get me a replacement. But, not sure what one will go back in my car though!
