Anyone test if the new BCM update prevents you from making a key with the OBD2 port?
Has anyone who’s gotten the Update tested if you can still make a new key via the OBD2 port? Im hoping this made that process impossible for random thieves on the street.

No good news, yet. Going to dig further on Monday. Need to order a new key, to do more testing. FYI, I sub car key programming out. My guy was afraid to remove all keys, before we KNOW he can program a new one. But the PIN code came right up, so he thinks there will be no issue, making a key w/ his $1700 programmer. One thing I did notice with the update, the permissions menu seems to be gone in settings.

See post 117 on the other thread regarding the update in this forum. GM claims certified locksmiths using approved tools should still have access.

The only risk this opens up is me, the legit owner unable to complete key programming after clearing all fobs, left with nothing working and a long tow or a mechanic house call... Deleting existing fobs should be optional, and deleting "all but the one currently in the car" should also be supported.

Also is this a tool that would be easy access? Could just anyone get the same tool as him?

Yes unfortunately, it is just a good scan tool w/key programming. So maybe the $300 amazon scan tools don't do it now? But the $2000 tools do? Not much of a security update, if so. I will let y'all know when I receive a key and dig deeper. As far as the permissions tab, there used to be a menu in settings that allowed apps to receive info from the car. I can't seem to find it anymore? |

Well, it's better than 30 seconds, I guess... Is yours a super expensive programmer or is it one of the $400 ones on eBay?

Bummer, but thank you for checking. I suppose if it takes longer, even if inevitable, it might be enough of a deterrent or afford time for intercepting thieves? |

We used the expensive programmer. In hindsight we should have: 1-Locked the car w/window down 2-Made the key from outside the car, without opening/unlocking the door 3-Tried the "cheap" programmer first. So now, to do that, gotta buy another key. You can only program keys once. If anyone knows a better way we can test, lemme know.

Thanks for your efforts! I think that approach might tell us if the common attack vector has been affected in a meaningful way.
