People have different preferences, let's not hijack OP's thread. I have wireless Android Auto (through AAWireless), nothing could be more comfortable, but I still hardly ever use it over the factory nav.

because sometimes you are traveling in areas that there is no cell service.

Well, technically you can download map regions prior to the drive and then use them without internet access, you just need to remember to do it while you still have service. Nevertheless, as I said above, not everyone likes the same things even when this seems counterintuitive.

I will confess I've probably used the GM maps less than 10 times total but it's the only way to get turn-by-turn on the HUD/DIC

truckrglenn, do you still have a 2017? If yes, I don't think it will work, this unit you purchased from Xi Jinping is for the new 2019+ infotainment, and our cars no longer get official map updates anyway (see screenshot below).

My 2023 map update came on a USB stick, had my VIN in the manifest already (with some checksum protection), the file structure was different and the infotainment version was 2.5 or something similar, not the 3.6 I see in your post.

Also, even if this is a legit update, while GM could've made them backward compatible, I would be very, very surprised if they actually gave a **** about us owners and made it so.

I'll give it a try anyway. Either way, it's a free return.

I use a wireless AA adaptor anyway. Was hoping (lol).

While my radio recognizes the SD card, it will not load the maps. Luckily, AliExpress offered free returns.

Glenn - if you ordered from the link I provided and you drive a 2017 Camaro it won't work. It says it is for Camaro (2019 - 2023).

I haven't updated my maps in a few years, so I went to the GM website to see how much they charge today. Mostly for HUD speed limit updates.

"There are no longer map updates available for purchase for your navigation system via this webstore or at GM dealerships. Thank you"

Same warning when I try to get maps for my 2018 Escalade.

Oh well .. Google maps works better for me anyway.

No, they are incompatible. 2019+ uses MyLink 3.0 and 2016-2018 updates are for the older MyLink 2.5 version. These are vastly different software releases all the way down to the languages and the platform used.

The most recent map update for 2018 cars is from 2023, and Here Technologies are no longer willing to sell it.

I still have my 2023 map update USB that I bought last year, but it's coded to the VIN, so now, after I installed it on my car, it's the "hackers only" edition . The encryption looks somewhat simplistic at first sight, but who knows, it may have more layers than I had time to mess around with it.

Yup, no more updates for 2018 and below. I asked them what the plan was via their contact form last week, no response so far, but the most I expect is a "never" in cringeworthy corporatespeak. I think their strategy is a yearly map update cadence for 5 years after a newer platform becomes avaiable, then dumping owners who have older vehicles.

Since the marginal cost of translating the new map data (that they must purchase anyway for the newer platforms) to older platforms is near zero, not providing the owners of these older vehicles with map updates for 20 or 15 or at least 10 years is a just another exercise in meaningless pennypinching, par for the course with any established US automaker.

Bumping this thread.

I was looking at the GM Nav Disc website. I know what you are saying, why don't I just use my phone and Google maps or Android auto. Well, I paid for a NAV system so I would like to be able to use it on occasion.

So from what I can see is GM does not offer NAV updates for the 16, 17, or 18, but offers for the 19 to 24. The difference I see is last time I updated my 16, the files were on a USB stick, but now they are on a SD card.

My questions are: Could I buy the SD card, copy it to a clean formatted USB, and then update with it? Or could I replace the USB ports in my car with one that has a SD slot, and then just insert the SD card.

PS trying to order the SD card, the site does not ask for my VIN number which would out me as a 16.
