Thanks for the replies. Sounds like I can do this myself "the right way" and not deal with the dealership service department.

So one last time: I won't break anything if I use one of those "dimples"?

No, you won't. That is how the plate should've been installed in the first place. Don't use giant timber screws though

Yeah the misaligned camera bothers me too but they had to fit the trunk open button somewhere in between the licence plate lights.

I don't think it affects parking though, it's a very small difference and they probably compensated in software with this virtual parking lines. But most likely it's not practically noticeable difference

Red arrows point to screws coming through from the inside of the bumper cover. If you do it right, there's plenty of plastic for the screws to bite into. If you're off a little, there's still enough. If you're off by a lot and need to do it again, you can get a kit like this that will let you drill out slightly larger holes and insert anchors.

Pending screw size I would pre-drill a hole 1/4 to 1/3 the diameter of the screw size

Wow, this is top notch customer service, and we're not even on a GM site. Big to Clyde for posting the pic.

Seeing the back of the bumper cover is very helpful.

GM's cheapness annoys me here. One of my mounting holes came pre-stripped from the dealer. Would it really have been that hard/expensive for GM to just leave a square hole for a replaceable anchor?

Lots of guys have hitches so they can trailer their fuel and tires to the track. Or bicycles, It’s not abnormal.

Wow thanks! Really helpful to see the other side. So it's really not "anywhere you want". You need to choose one of the locations.

This is off topic... I got mine for the bicycle rack. But then there's this guy https://youtu.be/PhRBfwFrUkM

I did it forum!

I've spent close to an hour looking at all the dimples and measuring everyting. I don't know about other states or different licence plates but for current California licence plate with hole distance at 176 mm, there is only one correct position! This is the only position that lines up with all 4 screw holes. And I think this is exact position that is used in clyde's photo above.

The dealership used the wrong dimple, you were all right!

Correct location (dealer selected one to the bottom left, the correct one is to the top right):
