M6 Transmission Fluid Change( Cooler?)

Hey folks,

I'm trying to get some info on this procedure as far as the involvement of the fluid that's sitting in the cooler but found nothing that really talks about a complete drain. Seems like people are just draining the trans which that takes 3.66 Quarts. Total capacity with Trans cooler is 5.2 Quarts as per AC DELCO's literature.

Are most of you just draining the trans only which would need 3.66 quarts to fill it? It just sucks that about 1.5 Quarts of old oil would linger. It will mix with new fluid but still. I guess, to get all of it out the system would need to be pressurized which I'm sure the dealer has this equipment to do that?

I do have a pneumatic pump to extract and fill fluid with but connecting it to the system without the proper fittings would probably prove to be a royal pain and I still don't know the entire system as I tried to get some info from the AC Delco's website but they don't seem to have complete manuals like they used to.

Any info is greatly appreciated, thanks!

if I owned an M6 I would drain from temp sending unit for 2 reasons

no oily mess & unit sits lower on the case

YMMV

I would probably try to get to the plug on the other side to clean out the magnet but we'll see. Question still is maybe the consensus is the majority are just doing a trans fluid change only, not the entire system with coolers?

increase the change frequency due to the residual fluid in the lines/ cooler ??

Sure, that's another option if nothing else
