Trans Fluid System
Having my filter changed, Mechanic I went to says his system is telling him my car has a 8.1 Qt trans fluid system, but when I bought the AC Delco trans fluid from Rock Auto it said it was a 3.7 Qt system.
Does anyone know how many quarts I need for this?

Have you looked at the owners manual? The answer is in there.
If you or a previous owner have lost the book, you can view and download the OM at chevrolet.com. |

So ya, now I get a bunch of different numbers.
8.1 - Mechanic 3.4 - Camaro 6 forums 3.7 - Rock Auto 10 - Trans flush (which is not what I'm getting) - Bill Estes's Chevrolet and more results from Camaro6 Forum which are not applicable Quote:
If that worked for me I wouldn't have started this thread.

Yep, pretty amazing this information isn’t readily available for the 10L80. I’m asking a similar type question in the transmission section and not a peep. I’ll probably just buy a 3 day subscription to AC Delco, copy what I can and move on. |

3.7 is a drain and fill, not including the converter, cooler, & lines etc

Wow. OP is right. This info used to be in the OM, but not anymore.
So now it's about following the flush and fill procedure in the shop manual. I would have a dealer do it. |

Is that a drain and fill? The mechanic said we aren't supposed to flush the trannies until after like 70k+ miles? Either way I picked up another 5 qts of trans fluid, giving me a total of 9 qts. JP said his 10 speed took 9 quarts. I don't know if that changes though as I think he has a 10 Speed LT1 with procharger.

I'm not saying this applies here, but my wife's Acura RDX holds about 3.5 quarts of ATF but it requires 10 quarts to do a factory spec'ed fluid change and it's because of the process: Drain, fill, drive 100 miles, drain, fill, drive 100 miles, drain, fill. It's total overkill. Also, the mechanic I use for most stuff (independent) has told me that the service process on transmissions is to exactly measure how much fluid you drain out and replace that amount only. This ensures that the exact proper amount is in the entire system, including the torque converter, since the amount that drains will vary depending on how much is actually in the pan at the time the plug is removed. |

But yes they have to measure exactly how much to pull out, there's not dipstick of sorts to check. His computer system was saying 8.1 qts, I do have 9 qts of the trans fluid though. If some of it doesn't get used no big deal to me.

took me a while to find the fill plug on the A10 transmission as mine has a noise reduction cover. Plus the standard allen wrenches won't fit in the tight space to remove the plug and vacuum the oil out of the pan. I have almost 30K on my car and my intent is to replace the filter and only the oil that I drain from the pan. i bought some snub allen wrenches and hopefully that will work. If not, I have no idea (other than dropping the pan and spilling oil) how to remove the plug. Such a crap design.
