How many of you are doing it right?
After the alignment issues I’m facing with installing my new GM 1LE wheels on my ZL1 (camber being off) I got to thinking, how many of you guys are ACTUALLY adjusting your alignment for the type of driving you’re doing? Do you take your ZL1 to the dealer every time you want to mob thru some canyons? Are you leaving it on OEM factory settings until you hit the track and then have the dealer adjust the alignment accordingly? I find it hard to believe everyone is changing their settings weekly depending on what canyon or spirited driving they’re going to do for the weekend. And what setting is best for some occasional canyon drives, and driving around town?

I get my ZL-1 aligned at the dealer, with -1 camber on the front, and I think they put the rear at -1/2 degree (can't remember), replacing the TTY bolts every time, and I call it good, and hope it lasts for a long time before I have to do it again.

How often do you do that? And how often are you tracking your car, or is it just a nice weekend type car?

I leave mine to the factory alignment so 0 camber and 0 toe, etc.
I also drive mine like this on the road course since I'm just having fun racing the car and honestly don't want to deal with aligning for a race then going back to align it for the street. I'm not trying to say any records and enjoy what the car can do. The car handles very, very well in the factory street alignment. If you're just driving around town and through the canyon from time to time. Then just leave the suspension in the factory street alignment spec since you're not going to be pushing the car to the limit would be on a track. |

I'd say most if not all guys who track these cars and also street drive them are leaving the track alignment on all the time. Myself included. Most who are in this boat do not go too crazy beyond GM's track specs. Get the front toe to zero and the rear toe to GM's spec and you'll be good. Get a set of SPL toe rods with the lockout, and buy new rear lower control arm adjuster bolts (camber) because they are one time use. Anytime the bolt is loosened it must be replaced. The nut is reusable. Find an excellent alignment guy because when these cars don't have a perfect alignment they don't drive nice.
If your street driving all the time (this includes canyon carving), you're fine to leave it a the factory alignment specs.

Interesting input from everyone, great info! So when I go into GM for my alignment this week, should I request new bolts? I don't believe they changed them out last time.

Changing it back and forth is wasting your time and money, the street and track settings aren't going to alter tire wear as long as the TOE is set. It's TOE that wrecks tires, not camber.
Opinions on TTY bolts here very widely. |

I put very few street miles on my car, basically back and forth to the track. I leave mine in track settings 100% of the time and update/check my alignment 2x a year.
Edit - I talked to my alignment tech (at the dealer) he reuses the bolts. Ken

I'm not sure if this is true 100% of the time, but an easy tell for a TTY bolt is if the torque spec is [XX] lbs. ft. + [XX] degrees OR [XX] fractional turn. Non-TTY bolts usually just have a numerical torque spec.
