Cutouts with headers and Borla Atak
I have 1 7/8” headers with high flow-cats, no 2nd cats, and borla atak with NPP. I love the way it sounds but when cruising it isn’t very loud. I got a set of QTP cutouts from a friend and went to get them installed by a highly rated exhaust shop in my area.
The owner told me the only place they will fit is right behind the mufflers. He said that because they have to go there, it won’t make any noticeable difference in sound. I keep my NPP valves open basically all the time but I find it hard to believe that the cutouts won’t make a difference. What do you guys think? |

I may be misunderstanding what you are saying, but if he puts the cut out AFTER the muffler...that is just like adding an extra exhaust tip/outlet.
The cutout HAS to be placed BEFORE the muffler to make a difference, this way the exhaust exits before it has a chance to go through the muffler and be quieted down.

No we both knew it has to go before the muffler, but the installer said that since it’s so far down stream that it won’t make a difference in the sound.

Okay, so the cutout would be before the muffler, but barely.
They may be right. The ATAK is close to, if not a straight pipe setup already. May be a small difference.

I have a Borla axle back and just bought my kooks headers and midpipes. I know someone else with the same setup and it's pretty damn loud.
As far as your question, the cutout should be alittle after the header. If you have the first cats, id put it maybe a foot or so past the cat. if you don't have any cats, then again, after the header, but also where it's easy to either get to (if you are going to manually be taking off the plates) or where the electric bracket part is out of the way so a speed bump won't rip it off. Personally, with that setup, it will be straight obnoxiously loud and sound worse, imo. And this is coming from someone that ran cutouts on my 406. |

So the startups and WOT are loud for sure, I don't want those to be any louder at all. I want it to be louder during normal take-offs. I probably wouldn't open them all the way, just something more aggressive. Maybe I am just used to it, idk lol.
