Ordering a new ZL1....too easy?
So I've decided I want to upgrade my SS 1LE and get a ZL1. They are impossible to find, so, I decided to order.
I contacted the biggest GM dealer in town, we've done business before on a new camaro, so its not like I'm off the street unknown. Anyway, I contact the dealer, he asks me to configure the car and send him the details, I did, and 15 mins later he sends me a "preliminary order" he configured in "order workbench" and that was it. I said, great lets go, he said he submitted into the system. They get allocations every 2 weeks, so he said it will be at least 2 weeks (or more) before GM confirms the order. After that, he's going to call me back with the details of when, etc, and collect a 500 dollar deposit. And thats it. I really have nothing more back from the dealer other than this preliminary order sheet, that I gather doesn't mean a whole lot. I didn't sign anything at this point, it all almost seems too easy. I see no reason for the dealer to lie to me, its in his best interests to sell me a car, but I'm taken back by the fact that I've spent more time on the phone ordering dinner than ordering this car. So, its like, did he order the car, or is he just trying to see if he can get an allocation first? Its the biggest damn dealer in the area, he gets some C08s from time to time, so I figure this place can deliver. Anyone had similar experiences ordering, that seemed like it was too easy? |

Almost no ZL1 allocations coming right now so it may be a longer process.

Expect to wait longer than 2 weeks for your order to get accepted though..then again you may have placed it at the right time when a ZL1 allocation is coming their way.

Yep, you will have to wait until that dealer gets a allocation for a 2SS and none of you options are on constraint. If you been waiting since April you may want to try ordering with more dealers since most do not take deposits until the get a official allocation from GM.

The dealer should be able to give you your six digit order number if it has been submitted. It should start with C right now.

I get the idea that it may be better to place multiple orders with several dealers, but it also seems to me if the biggest dude in town can't get one, the little guys aren't gonne be much better. I guess we'll have to see if I get lucky... good to know its normal though, never ordered a car before, least of all a 70k car... we'll see how much GM wants to do business.... |

You should have as others said a 6 digit order number. Also ask him how many other ZL1 orders he has in front of you, not Camaro orders, specifically ZL1 orders. You have to work on specific ZL1 orders, as others said, allocations come down for certain models and trims, they don't get blanket allocations to put in any old order they want to.

Dealer entering an order is simple, you get a printout with your order number and sit at status 1100 until your dealer gets a ZL1 allocation. If/when your dealer gets an allocation for a ZL1 that meet your specs, which may or may not happen, then your order goes to status 2000, which means your order is accepted by GM and they plan to build it. This used to mean wait about 8-12 weeks and your car would show up at the dealer. Nowadays, it could mean 6, 9, 12 months, just ask others on the forum who are still waiting for the 2022s to be delivered.
I hope production is improving a little bit but I think it may be demand slowing a bit due to inflation and interest rate are now 5-6% and rising. You may want to ask your dealer how many ZL1 allocations they have received so far this year and how many folks may be in line ahead of you. If they receive one allocation every 2 months and you have 2 folks ahead of you then the order may not be accepted for 4-6 months. This assumes they get an allocation for the spec you want. They may say we got one for a A10 convertible but you want a coupe M6, then you get skipped or they may even order the vert for stock even though you had an order. Sucks. That said, if you find a ZL1 on a lot and it is close to your specs at the price you want then you may want to grab it.

My dealer provided an update for 1SS1LE today (order placed 6 weeks ago). No match yet. “They have a lot of constraints”.

So, i get the fact that this will take a while. Ok... I'm kind of on the fence with an option, the PDR. I ordered with it, but I could just as well live without it.
If, ....or when...., the dealer calls me back to tell me he has an allocation and can get a build date, do I get an opportunity at that point to drop an option, or am I pretty much already locked in at this point of just having a preliminary order in? Wondering if I can drop the PDR later, or not. Either way, I'm ok, I'm not gonna stress whats on constraint or not, I'm just gonna roll with it, but I was wondering if I have any chance to change an option before locking it in..... |

I believe that you can alter it at the point he has an allocation but again you're talking about what's constrained and what is not, at that moment. FYI the PDR was something that was heavily constrained for many months, not sure where GM is sitting with that now. You may as well get a call saying we got a ZL1 allocation we can use on your order but you'll have to delete the PDR, or X or Y in order to get it accepted by GM and move past 1100.

Ordering is easy. Delivery seems impossible.
