Catback vs Axelback setups
Im looking to upgrade my exhaust after a road trip next week. As I look more into different exhaust systems im weighing out the best option. Sorry if this question is rhetorical but im not 100% clear on the different components of an exhaust when it comes to catbacks. Does a catback system only consist of the pipes from the cat to the axel, or does it go all the way back to the axel. I do understand an axel back is just the axel but when I hear catback systems no one mentions the axel. Also what is ideal for 6th gen catback setup or axel back setup and benefits of one over the other. Again apologies if this is a dumb question but Im unclear of the catback system mostly?

Cat back bolts up to the secondary cats and there is no cutting of the stock exhaust but will cost more. Axle back means you will have to cut the stock exhaust right after the crushed section and will be less expensive. If you don't ever plane on putting your stock muffler or suit case back on then axle back would be the less expensive option. I did the AWE axle back and have loved it from day 1.

Catback is everything from secondary cats back to the exhaust tips, and axle back is everything from the rear axle(basically) back to the exhaust tips. Catback usually comes with more volume increase and/or a different tone. These exhausts are real pricey, I would do as done above and go axle back personally.

Thanks, thats pretty much what i wanted to confirm is that a Catback system encompasses everything cat back while including the axel back of an exhaust. Versus explaining them as two totally separate things. Im looking at a corsa system and Its only like 800 more for the mid pipe. I was thinking about keeping npp and changing the mid pipe first, but dont want to be wasting money. I love the sound just too quiet and dont want to void my warranty with headers being the car still new under 2k miles. |

I will likely have to make the same decision as you when my ZL1 arrives. I will likely keep it stock for a few years, and I will need more volume than the factory NPP provides. Some axle-backs are also too quiet with an otherwise stock car, so there is justification for a complete cat-back. Decisions...decisions.
