Oil leak on Dyno??
Hello! I have a 2022 ZL1 that I recently put Kooks longtubes, Rotofab cold air intake, and Borla exhaust on. Well this afternoon I had it dynotuned and the first pull went perfect for baseline run, no issues. Then he adjusted air/fuel for the lean codes, and removed the cats from the PCM. Second pull(581hp@6500 RPMS) the front main starting spraying oil at the top of the RPM range. He shut it down, cleaned it all up and the leak is gone at idle. So lthen he asked me what he wanted me to do(I had a hour drive home), and I just said cruise it at 70 for a few miles then punch it to 110 and let it decel, just to see if it leaked at all during driving conditions. Nothing, we looked it over THOROUGHLY, I drove it home and it runs perfect, no leaks no nothing.
Has anyone heard of this?? Any idea what could have happened, what should I do before trying to finish the tune. |

Is this a common thing? it doesn't leak at all outside of that one pull

It can happen when the crankcase pressure gets too high. Usually happens with boosted cars. Or you could just have a faulty one from the factory. Either way if it's still at the shop have them change it out. Shouldn't cost much and pretty simple of a job for them. You also might want to look at ways to release some of that pressure like a Mighty Mouse Catch Can or a breather on the valve cover.

Your tune is too lean and/or spark advance too aggressive IMO. If you detonate it can cause excessive crankcase pressure. Mike (toohighpsi) had a good post on this a while back. Good call by Puddin on the MM Wild catch can as insurance though. But I’m still running the LT seal with no problem.

Well finally got it figured out, the front main was installed backwards on the car. Which would explain the oil coming out at high RPMs. I'm just surprised it wasn't leaking all the time..

Great news that you found the problem and it was an easy fix. Just curious - was the seal backwards from the factory or did you open up the engine sometime in the past?

It was backwards from the factory. I bought it with 10 miles on it. All its ever had done was CAI, exhaust, headers. Then i found the leak on its first trip to the dyno

Are you sure it was installed backwards? The lt seals are installed differently than the ls and many make that mistake. Not that I’m questioning your mechanic but you may want to double check because I’ve never heard of that kind of factory mistake. The lt seals can hold up quite well and on the several 1000+ horsepower cars I’ve built for people I’ve never had an issue with one. Many of the large shops will say the same. Again, not that it’s impossible to fail but timing tables and a/f not properly set in a tune can lead to failures like you’ve mentioned. Just keep a close eye and maybe double check some things.

I totally understand what you are saying, but yes it was definitely backwards, on the other forum I made a post actually as well. Its under ZL1 specific and I uploaded pics of the seal before it was replaced and after. Car is now up and running with no leaks. I just have to go pick it up hopefully today |
