When I’ve used the uhaul trailer, I just bring my tool set and remove the front end plates before loading! . No wood needed.

The U-Haul rental from CA to AZ was over $600.00 per trip, and I had to make a few trips. This trailer cost me a little over 3K. Made all the trips, both ways and still have the trailer for future trips.

i just removed the bump stops of the uhaul and put them back on after the car was loaded, the 2nd time around i didnt put them back on at all and was good to go other than the strange look from the uhaul man after he sees me bolting them back on...lol.
