2017 SS Conv. isolated aftermkt Stereo sys pointers?
Have a 2017 SS Conv and I want to have an aftermkt stereo installed that is isolated from the rest of the car's electronics. Primarily, the stereo is weak and not loud enough even when the top is up, let alone when it is down. So awful and not loud enough at all. Secondly, I have NEVER in my life had a car that makes SO many annoying dings and chimes for everything I touch or do. I heard they are integrated through the radio, and I never want to hear another 'ding' come out of that mutherf***er again.
I did read on other threads that I will need my own amp because the stock one has all the crap hardwired into it, and that given the amount of work it takes to get to the rear panel speakers, I will likely skip upgrading them and just do the dash/door/maybe subs. I care not about Mylink/Onstar/GPS features or displays, OR the rear camera display. I don't need any of it. I ONLY want the thing to crank my music over bluetooth and power on with accessory power. One question I do specifically have is will my climate controls all still work, even though I will not see a fan strength readout on the radio? I can tell how hard the damned thing is blowing by putting my hand over it. Any other tips/requirements/suggestions/drawbacks I should be aware of? Thank you anyone for any time. |

What do you intend by "isolated from the rest of the car's electronics"? Are you planning on using the existing touch screen as a control for the music, or putting in a completely new stereo reciever?

You can try this: http://www.metraonline.com/part/107-GM3B
I think it only works with these 2 Pioneer radios: https://www.pioneerelectronics.com/P...X/DMH-C2550NEX https://www.pioneerelectronics.com/P...X/DMH-C2500NEX I am not sure if there are any features/functions lost for upgrading. I don't think anyone has actually tried this out yet. It is pretty new as it was just announced at CES this year.

Thank you for the link to that- that may very well be what I end up using for the head/screen mount. Another issue I will have to sort, is that I really don't have a place for subs... there's really no space in the convertible trunk.
So I may end up having to spring for really top-end 6x9 ovals instead of rounds and hope i can get enough bass out of them. I listen to mostly rock, so I don't need rap-thump level of bass output, lol. Like I was saying above, it only, ONLY needs to play music. So I won't be needing any extra fancy steering column control harnesses, GPS, video, camera, onstar, CHIMES*!*, or other processor/adapter units put in-line anywhere. When I said isolated, I mean isolated. Seriously, f*** modern car audio and user interface engineering. Why couldn't they simply build in options to customize and configure crap like the alert chimes. To turn them off. Thee one-and-only instance that incessant, infernal, UNholy binging is ever a benefit is when one gets out of the car and leaves lights on. |

Check this thread out I just posted about a sub. There are options that fit in our trunk. It just takes a bit to find them.

Please keep us posted. I'm really curious what happens if you replace the original touch screen with one of those Pioneers. I have a feeling if those units don't support the menu functions built into the car, you may loose a lot of functionality for the car settings.

I have been thinking bout this all along, it's one of my points of reluctance with the isolation. But so far, all I have noticed is that the fan strength indicator would disappear... which I don't need. I am willing to just go without video, backup cam, wifi, onstar, GPS, phone- all that other crap. As long as my climate control still functions when I punch the buttons and turn the dial around the vents- I will be fine.

I have been thinking about this too. What if you kept the factory built in head unit, and had a couple isolated digital inputs? Like a separate blue tooth/Wifi/USP input mounted remotely, that completely skipped the factory units? That might give you the sound improvements while maintaining the factory functionality.
I know Emotiva makes a nice blue tooth receiver for home stereo's with a built in DAC that runs on USB power, not AC. Maybe that could be used to skip the factory signal and go right into a great sound system? -Geoff

Seems to me that your best bet is to retain the stock front end (which really includes the display in the dash and the receiver and other modules behind and beside the glovebox) and then use a NAV TV or other DSP interface. Some of those allow amplification of music without amplification of the various chimes, and they may allow you to turn down the chimes below stock volumes. Honestly, if you're really willing "video, backup cam, wifi, onstar, GPS, phone" just to get rid of chimes, then that's pretty extreme. You might have bought the wrong car: you need to buy a 4th-gen Camaro.
