Differential Moan

I've seen people talking about chattering differentials in these forums, but couldn't find a post about moaning. I get a sort of "whoa-whoa" sound the first couple of turns I take after my car's been sitting a while. It goes away pretty quickly. Anyone else heard such a thing? Don't know if I need to do anything about it or not.

when I had my ss, it would do this on the first couple of turns when cold (temp cold, not car cold), and would go away.

they flushed the diff and it went away until the next winter, then came back.

it was a reverberative groaning, wasn't mechanical sounding at all. At first I thought it was my subwoofer fading in and out.

GM released a TSB for this issue. Once I get home I’ll send you the TSB number and what the procedure is

If it goes away then its probably a fluid issue. Maybe they swap it with a new viscosity thickness fluid as a fix.

The dealer confirmed they'll fix this for free, provided I get the car in before my extended powertrain warranty runs out at 60,000 miles. I'm in the high 40s right now.

Well you only get some of the fluid out on the first fluid change, for me the second time seems to have resolved it. I did it myself, not too bad.

Mine sounded like the parking brake was sticking. It wasn't a chatter, definitely a groan. Dealership replaced the diff fluid (he said it was surprisingly dirty considering the car had a few thousand miles on it) and I haven't heard it since. It's put up for the winter but the coldest I've had it out was mid 40's and the read end was still quiet.

With you on that. Had to take my car in twice! Never had an issue since

I paid $15 for 32oz (now $23) but you really need about 40oz so buy 2

Chattering or snapping is bad, but I guarantee you that moaning when the diff is cold is just a feature of the limited slip design.

Change the fluid but eventually the moan will come back.
