Ported Heads with Stock Cam

Before everyone says go ahead and do cam all at once, that is not the route i want to go.

So my car is basically FBO. Has headers, intake, ported 95mm tb, ported msd, e85.

I want to do the ported heads and while im there replace the lifters, upgrade the pushrods and do the trunion upgrade on the rockers in an effort to try to increase the shift rpm to the 6800 area without valvetrain issues.

My question is can i upgrade the springs to something like the BTR .660 springs while keeping the stock cam or would staying with the stock springs be better. IE will the BRT springs being higher lift cause an issue with the stock cam.

Thanks

There are plenty of springs in between. Heavier than necessary springs rob power and introduce other trade offs, id look at a coated beehive.

It'll be quieter for sure, with stock springs, why do you want to raise the rpm? with the stock cam you are out of the torque curve way before 6800 and there wont be any real gain, the real benefit would be to install a cam while you're doing all the other stuff, unless you just want to sound like a 5.bro.

Upgrade your CAM!

I am as well FBO with E85... my lifters AND cam went out.

Learn from my mistake lol.

Bc I want to maximize the hp up top from the ported MSD and ported heads. Plus, I can do head swaps, but feel a bit more nervous about doing a cam swap. If I can do the heads and do the dod delete part on the top end, should be much easier for a shop to do a cam swap and therefore be much cheaper in labor.

To be honest with you, I found the cam swap on my LS1 to be no more difficult that the head swap. Actually, the physicality required to break the head bolts free and crank them out made the Head swap on that car the more difficult thing between the two. The only additional thing you would have to do is removing a couple more front accessories and the harmonic balancer.

I don't think you can run different lifters on the stock cam. The stock cam lobes are designed for the afm lifters. So if you do a dod delete then you need to change cam.

Thats unfortunate but there's tons of guys out there with a lot of miles on their fbo cars without issues. Dare I say messing with your internals starts effecting reliability a bit more.

You're probably right, but aren't just some of the lifters afm lifters, not all?

King,

I had not thought about that. Figured i have the DOD disabled so the lifters are acting as normal, but they might not be the same. Ill look into it a little more and see what i can find.

Thanks!

Yes they are half and half. The cam lobes for the afm lifters will not work with non afm lifters. It's this way on all DOD/AFM engines going back to LS.
