Speed Engineering Headers question

Hey everyone. I’m looking to pick up the 1-7/8” Headers from Speed Engineering but they don’t offer a catted version. I live in Virginia and I will not be able to pass inspection without the primary cats. Can anyone guide me as to what I need to do? I’m looking to keep my NPP system also.

Seems to me that you'd have to buy somebody else's catalysts and then find a way to make them fit in that scenario.

Assuming here that the reason you're interested in the Speed Engineering is that you want cheap (China) headers? There is another company out there with cheap (China) headers, that does offer some catalytic connection pipes as well. That company is Texas Speed and Performance, aka TSP.

Tsp looks like a good deal, the problem with tsp, if you're looking into them. They dont come with a wideband bung, so you have to get one welded, and they don't offer a heat treatment coating. Jet hot just came out with some headers from kooks in a thinner metal, but once again, they dont sell cats, if they do, they have to order them from kooks at full price, which brings the price up to their thicker version. I've been looking for a while and I've come up with jba headers, or kooks. These are the only two that I have found that can be purchased with hiflo cats, a wideband bung, and heat treatment coating. I'm buying a set soon, but figured I'd wait untill the 4th of July sales kick in. Dynatech has a wideband bung but no hi temp coatingas well. If anyone else knows of any other let me know. If you dyno tune, I believe you dont need headers with a wideband bung, but if you are remote tuning, a bung in the headers is the way to go. I hope this helped a little.

I hear they are Chinese made knock offs? Why would you want chinese crap on your car? China steel is some of the worst impure crap out there.

I got mine installed two weeks ago. They discolor like 304SS, they are not magnetized like 304SS. We will see how it holds up in the long run but so far everything seems to be fine. I mean honestly the TSP headers are the same thing and aren't made in the US but I don't see people shitting on those as much. In my experience so far with these the fitment was great, but the clamps are cheap as hell. Just be prepared to shell out some more money for some real nice clamps.

So why is the wide band bung important? A lot of people have these headers and have no problems? As far as the heat shield I’m going to wrap them and will be covering the spark wires.

Wideband bung is important for remote/email tuning as you actually have to drive the car on the road, with usually less than ideal conditions. I'm not saying there is a problem with the headers at all quality wise, just that they don't have the bung in them. You can easily have someone put one in for you, but that is more money, and another chance of something going wrong, aka leaks. If you don't have a wideband bung, you need, I forget what it's called, let's call it a sniffer. You clamp it into your muffler and do your data logs. Driving around with a clamp in your exhaust doing triple digit speeds isnt the greatest of ideas. Therefore, headers without bungs are harder to tune remotely. On a dyno, there is no problem, as the car is static. If the header has a bung for the sensor, you screw it in and drive. Far less chances of it falling out or doing damage, that's why imo, if you are going to remote tune, find a header with a bung. Obviously, I'm no expert, though, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Thank you for so much detail I appreciate it. Now I know what a wide band bung is. But good thing for me is that I have a tuner local to me who’s great with our cars and has tuned 6th gen FBO to well over 500Whp. He’ll be doing all the tuning in person.

Just get some quality Hooker, or Doug Thorley Headers, they have been around since the glory days of the 50s and 60s. That's good for something.

What!? I talked to them at lsfest in Vegas and they told me they don't sell them with wideband bungs, and they don't show up in pictures /shrug. Unless, it's because its in the "off road" connecting pipe, hmmm. I guess it's time for more research
