Pilot 4S vs Goodyear S3 - $400 Difference worth it?
Corded my stock tires with the last track day and now need to order tires.
On Tire Rack, the 4S are $400 more per set than the stockers. https://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireS...SortCode=60158 From reading the comments here... the 4S are better daily drivers as they are better in the rain and in the cold, a little comfier and have better wear. The Goodyears are better at the track. I'm not interested in the rain performance or cold... but was going to get the 4S because of improved wear even though I do track the car ~4x per year. But with the tires being 1/3rd more expensive... are you actually getting 1/3rd better wear?

Not for your case...I use the PS4'S for regular driving and trips...they are Fantastic for ride, wear, and rain...although they don't have the track grip of the stock Goodyears.

I recently made the switch and had the same questions.
The 4S hook on the street all around better. The 4S are very quiet. Comfort doesn't feel any different. I don't drive mine in the rain or cold but what is nice is they don't require any real warmup time before they hook on the street. Car is 710+whp (mustang dyno). The SC3 were very consistent on the track (raced it on road coarse a couple times). I have no feedback on 4S track performance and will likely choose something else on different wheels if I head back to road coarse track.

I just bought a set. My Goodyear's only went 11k miles. These are supposed to go 30k miles. I have a 13' ZR1 with a similar Michelin tire on it that's a run flat. Those have 19k on them and still look very good. I don't track my cars but I think the Michelin's are a much better deal in the long run. The only difference I have noticed on the ZL1 is that it rides better.

The 4S are a better all around tire. They are great on the street, are trackable & have great tread wear. Will that out perform the GY on the track, no but they will in every other aspect

Will the Michelin’s last a 3rd longer than the good years? No. Will they last longer? Maybe. Depends on your driving. You’re going to overheat the MS4 which will tear it apart on the track. I don’t know what track your at so can’t be too sprecific with an answer.
The purchase I would make would be PZero. iI’s a full depth tread unlike the Goodyear’s. The PZero is a bit more money but not much at all. The PZero will move around under the car a bit more at full tread depth than the Goodyear’s. If tire life for a track day even were my priority it would be the PZero. I just don’t see Michelins street tires fairing well on hot laps. The MSC2 now that’s a different sory!

As tires age and wear down, the handling gets better (less tread squirm) and the grips decreased (more heat cycles). As to the OP's question. Depends on what you are looking for in a tire. You want better rain performance, go with the PS4, you want better grip with higher G loads, go SC3. The difference you pay in price is off-set by the tire longevity. PS4's will last longer, but you are paying more for that extra life. You pay less for the SC3 and you get less life, but it all balances out when you factor price/wear as a whole.

if you are a USAA member, theres a 25% off on the stock Goodyears plus up to $200 more in rebates, not sure if tire rack giving the same, but when i price them on USAA a set is $961, plus $100 mail in rebate. includes install at goodyear shop.
I'm in the more streetable category, otherwise I'd jump on this deal.

Even with taking the car to the track 4x per year you are still better off with the Pilot 4S.
1. Longer Tread Life vs S3's 2. Better Traction for everyday street driving vs S3's 3. Better in the rain vs S3's 4. Heat up faster vs S3's 5. S3's do have edge on the track versus PS4's but only slightly. **6. Michelin states you should get 50,000 km's tread life and if you don'y you will get pro rated money back. The tire shop confirmed this for me and they sent back to Michelin and depending on how much tread life is left and condition of the tire you will get money back.Even if you get $50-$100 per tire that helps for the purchase of new ones. ![]() Bottom line is the Pilot 4S's have a reputation for a reason and is why it is the drivers choice for high performance cars!
