DIY manual trans fluid change for the SS?

I've been looking for the "how to" on this for some time. The search function seems permanently off-line.

Anyone have a link or able to post up a good idea?
Thanks!

There's two bolts easy to identify, one on top one near the bottom.

Unscrew the drain it will empty out. Tighten & torque & retorted it.

Undo the top fill plug & fill until the fluid level seeps out

I did this recently. The very lower drain plug is in a hard to get to spot.. Like the Tranny rear cross member is right in the darn way. You'll see a little sensor screwed into the tranny very close to that area. Near the bottom. It is the Tranny Temp sensor. You can simply disconnect the electrical connector and unscrew the sensor and use this as a drain. I had the front of my car up on jack stands and this helped angle the car so the fluid would come out good. After the fluid seemed to stop I jacked up the rear and saw a little more drizzle out. After that put the sensor back in, plug it in and use the top Fill plug to replace fluid of your choice.

I went with Mobil 1 Synth and it made shifting noticeably smoother. If I had it to do all over again I'd probably go with Redline. I heard that one is very good as well.

A quick tip, always loosen the fill bolt first.

Thank you gentlemen!

It sounds straight forward. I was concerned the trans cooler on the SS might present something unusual.

I will be sure to measure what drains out and put at least that much back in. I didn't know if it was possible to drain the cooler (a little radiator I guess?) and then need a special sequence in order to re-fill it completely or release any trapped air.

Thanks again.

And BTW- I'll be using Royal Purple Synchromax because of past positive results I've had with that brand.

I did mine very recently - Used the Redline D4 ATF - Much better than stock - and IMO better than my past experience with Royal Purple. I ended up removing the transmission brace as I was worried about making a big mess.

Removing the brace long enuff to drain was exactly what I was considering- did you place anything under the tranny (bottle jack with a block of wood or a box) to support things while the brace was off?

Also, I've already bought the RP, so I'm stuck with it but will report back here about results. If I'm disappointed, I'll change it again, LOL. After putting up with the clunker trans in my last 5th gen V6, I'm not gonna quit til this one's as good as it can get either!

I was really impressed with this trans for the first couple of thousand miles but when the weather got cooler (I mean the 50's) it got balky and could have gotten "crunchy" if I had forced shifts. I want that butter feeling back!

Thanks again!

I was fortunate to have access to a lift to do the job. I did use a trans jack to hold it up. I also removed a small "brace under the brace" as well to have a clear, unobstructed path of the drain plug. Be careful as there is this kind of sharp plate of thin metal underneath those braces and you can cut your fingers on it. Also, the tranny fluid shoots out of that drain hole, so have your drain pan ready to go. I used pretty close to the whole four quarts on the refill, using a Harbor Frieght transfer pump.

Here’s a little tip I learned. If you want to improve shift feel, bleed the brakes more frequently.
