Tire Trailer MODS almost finished
My Weekend Project
Most recently I bought a tire trailer from another track rat. When he bought it it was a northern tool 5 x 8 utility trailer but he modifed the WIDTH of it and made it about 8 inches narrower. He also double channeled some of the bracing and added some diamond plating. You will notice he installed a HUGE ICE chest and a NICE tool chest towards the FRONT of the trailer. He had two fuel bucket containers as well. Spare tire holder was added to the front of the tool box that opens up towards the BACK of the trailer. Trailer weigha ABOUT 280 pounds now. My LOADED weight will be about 800 pounds. My first mod was to add some D-Track plates with some GRADE 8 bolts so that I could run E-TRACK retaining straps. If you look closely at the BACK view picture of the trailer you can see the BLACK e-track brackets below each of the tires in the REAR of the trailer. There is also a set of e-track brackets in FRONT of each tire. Needing FOUR JUG holders instead of just TWO, I decked out the area on the FRONT side of the trailer. The FRONT view pic simply shows TWO fuel jugs just sitting there loose but I have a TWO bucket VP racing fuel jug holder coming MONDAY that these two fuel jugs will actually sit in. This trailer DID NOT come with a tongue jack so that was added as well. Since the trailer was too narrow to hold FOUR of my 12 inch wide wheel/tire combo, I installed two sets of eyelets in the cargo area of the trailer and that is the home for the 4th tire/wheel. Only other mod I am considering is to swap out to a larger diameter trailer wheels. These are 12 inch and I am looking at 14-15 inch possibly.

Looks like a great project! Underneath, the trailer where the tool box is and the front gas jugs are sitting, you could probably mount a trailer spare wheel / tire or two.

Actually the spare sits right in front of the tool box in its own cutout. The pictures dont show it. There is a small area in front of the spare and the back of the ice chest where I put my helmet bag

Yeah Thanks!!! Thats the main reason I am looking for larger tires. I am not sure I can keep myself from going more than 65MPH for any length of time. ETRAILER sells a 13 inch tire wheel combo that will still fit under the fender cover and it has an M speed rating which is 81MPH.

Thanks.
I just ordered THREE 13 inch tire and wheels from www.etrailer.com https://www.etrailer.com/s.aspx?qry=ttwa13Rtmws These have speed rating of M (81 MPH). I will have to make some new brackets for the fender covers since this tire is 24 inches tall so the fenders have to move up about four inches. I will have my powdercoater do these in satin black finish to match my car wheels. I also have received the VP racing Fuel Jug holder which I will install tomorrow on the trailer. see pic

This may be a dumb question but is there a reason a regular car wheel and car tire can not be used on the trailer? Other than bolt circle pattern or wheel offset?

TEKONSHA ZCI trailer interface DOES NOT work
OK so today I was having this interface installed that several of us have mentioned that allows you to tie into your existing wiring for your trailer wiring WITHOUT having to splice into your factory wiring. This is the EXACT module I was referring to:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CKQJCBY/ So my installation guy had to call TECH SUPPORT and they finally stated that this PARTICULAR product WOULD NOT work with my 2019 Camaro SS after they did some debugging and testing They apparently have ANOTHER one that will however so I am having THAT installed tomorrow. I will post up the product information on THAT one if it works. It appears that original unit DOES work on earlier year models. The tech support guy was surprized the unit I originally purchased would not work on my 2019 but he suggested that the other product WOULD so we will try that. Tomorrow I will also post up pics of my MODIFIED Curt hitch that I will be installing. Basically when NOT in use the hitch will be completely hidden much like the LEROY ENGINEERING hitch.

Given the amount of weight (I'll estimate 600 pounds between tools, supplies, wheels/tires, etc.) you'll have on the trailer and that passenger car tires will support 1K, does the trailer tire rule apply here? |
