Tire Gouged - Replace?

Its the protective edge of the tire. Basically the part that helps keep from scratching your wheel on light contact. Obviously you exceeded that threshold. It needs to be replaced but it wont blowout on your way to the tire shop.

I would replace it. It not likely to blowout at low speeds driving in a straight line, but that part of the tire is now much weaker than the rest.

Replace and the unfort side is a tire shop is going to insist on 2 tires for that axle and possibly not endorse just that one tire.

Looks like low wear on that tire. I would replace just the one tire.
If you have road hazard warranty it might be covered. This would fall under "sidewall damage that compromises safety." |
