Cruise control button.
My cruise control button cover fell off the other day while driving, what the heck! Anyways, a new module is only $51, not too bad. My question is, do I have to remove the steering wheel to replace it, or just the airbag? Doesn't look like fun removing the steering wheel so trying to avoid it.

It's been a while, but I think the screws holding these in place can be exposed by only removing the air bag. Since this is step 1 of removing the steering wheel anyway, it costs you basically nothing to check
![]() Now if it turns out you do have to remove the wheel, it has orange loctite on the T50 center bolt, be prepared with a giant cheater bar and a strong T50 bit. Since it's so easy to strip the bolt, I wouldn't use an impact here but ideally have a second person around to hold the wheel while you break the bolt loose with the cheater bar, plus a spare T50 bolt in case you mangle the original. No idea why GM thought a torx bolt would be better here than a normal hex head...

That's what I like to hear, lol! Grabbing a spare bolt is a great idea, wish I thought of that before ordering the module, doh, lol!
Appreciate the help, as always! |

I had this happen the same way. I made a post about it which ill look for. For the most part its easy....except getting the actual module out there r 2 plastic clips on the corners that are a real pain. The airbag you can disconnect completely if you want but I was able to just fold it up and it stayed out of the way. Of course disconnect the battery first and give it a good 10-15 mins b4 u start just incase any power still in the harness.

can you heat the Torx bolt without ruining anything?
on motorcycles, they use LocTite on a 50Torx shock bolt, and they are a B to get off but if you hit it with a Plumbers Torch, it melts the LocTite, and it just unscrews easily. IDK, just thinking out loud |

You dont need to remove the steering wheel. With the airbag out of the way and the trim pieces removed, the module is all by itself. Just do yourself a favor. Its going to be a pain you are gonna want to "see if I can get this plastic clip up just a hair more"... dont. They are fragile and hold the module in. If i remember correctly, I had to go around a few times and slowly open up each 1 at a time till the plastic "relaxes" enough to let the module pop out. Also... make sure you plus ALL the wires back in. I think there is just 2 or 3. But I forgot 1 and had to do it all over again. |

Since working with/around an airbag I would also disconnect the battery.
