Inner fender liners.......torn up.

So.....I'm checking to see if anyone else has run into this problem?

Just had both front inner fender liners replaced (thankfully under warranty) as they got completely destroyed from four track days last fall.

This is driver's side, passenger was about 75% this bad. Actually cracked the headlight unit cap as you can see in the pic. Also replaced that.

Appears that rubber clag and/or some rocks we're flung from the top of the tire under speed and punched through the liner. Once it got started it tore it up pretty good. First noticed it after the third track day and just hoped it wouldn't get too bad the final day.

Tires were not rubbing, only projectiles thrown into the liner, had a bunch of rubber inside the holes and that is what cracked the headlight cap.

I'm looking into something to coat the replacement liners with to harden them a bit to stand up to the track.

Anyone ever put coating on this "felt like" material? Any input or advice would be appreciated.

What about truck bed liner like Rhino lining?

It's going to add some weight, but would probably work great.

fiberglass resin painted on them to make them hard. I would ASSUME the material would soak up the resin.

Yea.....I'm considering either Heruculiner or a rubberized coating of some sort. Hoping to find something that isn't horribly toxic like the Herculiner coating is. I used it on my FFR GTM aluminum panels and it'll stink up your garage for a month....

There was a post on facebook about this and there was also a wiring harness that was destroyed as a result and the person that posted it actually re-routed the wiring harness to prevent it from being damaged again. I will see if I can find it.

First time I looked at the car I couldn’t believe this material was used there.

Many cars have this material in there these days. Our 2012 Grand Cherokee had that crap and they got torned up after a mild offroad excursion. They did however replace them under warranty. It was nothing but a grocery getter after that.

OP is it maybe the fact that you are using the Z/28 rims and not the ones for the car? i looked at my car last Friday when i was getting new tires and had non of that, think that can make this happen.

P.S. did you lower the front end?

Ofer,

Since the Z/28 wheels are the exact same size and offset...and the Hoosier R7's are actually slightly smaller in height than the oem Goodyears, I believe it is debris being flung from the top of the tire rather than any contact from the tire. Have not lowered the car from stock.

There was a fair amount of tire rubber clag through the hole and into the area surrounding the headlight. I'm thinking it was the sticky tires....

Going to apply some rubberized coating and give that a go.....

I'll give you a call this week to catch up too!

I found this on the new Camaros quite bizarre. Simply because of the material GM used. Possibly to make the Camaro LIGHT as possible was for this reason. Its a blessing for working around and changing headlight by pushing down on the frail wheel well to get your hand down in there but a curse for protection/durability. I was changing headlights out one day from Halogen to LED and noticed the wheel fender wasn't even steel or part of the fender frame. It was like a carpet on card board. So it was if it were paper material. Vvery simple to change headlight by pushing down on the frail wheel then push it back up under the well well when you done... However I think Camaro owners will be having torn or need to replace this material/part in future due to wear and tear and from rocks, cold/hot climates
