Considering HPTuner

Hey guys,

Camaro is in storage for the winter, naturally I am looking at things to buy for next season.

I'm considering the HPTuner system, though the price seems steep at $600

Since I am not looking to do any major tuning until the car is out of warranty, are there any benefits to having the HPtuner equipment?

I like having data, and that is the primary reason for consideration. I am also interested as to how "deep" one could go.

What code does their software allow you to access? I heard you could change some of the basic parameters to drive modes and the like.

Looking for just an overview of some of features I guess.

Let me know your thoughts!

Hey Annihilate,

This is a great question... and although I am NOT a tuner, I will provide some perspective.
As a fellow "nerd for data" I feel the same way about wanting more data points, and adjustability. If cars is your hobby, and you are invested in this not only for the initial hardware costs, but to invest time in learning HPT then I say "go for it"

Option.2 - For alot less $ and time, you could just get a Banks Data Monster. This would provide you with 8 additional data points while you drive, push of the button data logging, the ability to read and clear codes, and alot more.

This is the option that peaked my interest more that HPT, and I only use HPT when helping with a remote tune, or changing my fan settings.

Perhaps their is an argument to have both, but either way... I say dive in, and have fun!

It doesn't really let you go very "deep"... its more about changing engine parameters that are variables.

I guess you could perceive changing when the npp valves close as deep...

I used it to do useful things like lower the temperature of the fan strategy. Move it away from "the best emissions possible" and closer to "the plastic coolant parts might last longer"
It also can remove useless things like top speed limiters and displacement on demand activation.
If you have a wideband integrated with it you can do some data logging and see where your fuel trims are a little out and go add or remove fuel per trim cell.
I was thinking of moving the idle up just a little to give me the ability to creep in first while I'm stuck in traffic, since I'm running a manual.
I probably used it to remove a lot of useless fault codes like p0128 but i don't really remember anymore.
The 3rd gen hp tuners is great for just simply data logging your everyday drive or track runs without having a computer in your car with you.
I would recommend it.

There are training modules you have to take with HP Tuners before you can see how deep the rabbit hole actually goes.

A tuner will have access to most if not every aspect of the deep hole. But some perameters you may not be able to change until you take a training module which is more or less upgrading the licensing so you can have access to those parameters. As an example I cannot change my Camshaft misfire sensors until I take the training module for it from HP Tuners. Tuners can change this but I can't.

The hole does in fact go quite deep for those that want to dip their toes in it.

But for the most part a tune file will get you access to a good amount of things, but some things you may not have access to that a tuner will.

It also depends on the tuner, some tuners lock the tune file so that neither you nor other shops can manipulate the tune at all. I try to avoid tuning shops like this for that reason. It is why I never took my car to Katech or Livernois knowing they lock the tune files. I am pretty sure GPI does not along with other tuning shops like Pray Performance, CBI Street Cars who works with Shane Hinds Tuning.
