Troubleshooting Advice After LTG Engine Swap - DTC Issues and Limp Mode
Good evening all,
I’m reaching out in hopes of some guidance after running into issues following an engine swap on my 2019 Camaro 2.0T. To provide some background: I swapped the engine due to a failure in the internals of the original motor, where I shot the piston rings into the oil pan. The replacement is a low-mileage (under 30k miles) LTG engine sourced from a 2017 Cadillac ATS. Upon completing the swap and firing the engine up, I encountered multiple diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), mainly related to the camshaft and crankshaft sensors. I'll attach a list of the exact DTCs, but the key issue seems to be timing-related, with some codes pointing to an "over-advanced" timing issue. Given this, I’m trying to determine whether the issue is wiring-related (perhaps a pinched wire during the harness installation) or a potential problem with the donor engine itself, as I can’t rule out the possibility that the timing was off before I installed it. To add more context, the car runs and drives, but it’s stuck in limp mode. The engine itself purrs like a kitten and revs very smoothly, but it’s undrivable due to the limp mode. I tried performing a camshaft relearn with my scanner, but that was unsuccessful due to the presence of these persistent DTCs. I’ve already checked through the entire wiring harness, and while I did find a few busted clips (likely from the removal process), the clips are still functional and properly connected. I didn’t find anything obvious out of the ordinary, but I’m concerned I might have missed something critical in the engine swap process. At this point, I’m uncertain whether the solution lies in replacing the PCM, rewiring the harness, replacing the sensors that are throwing codes, or if I need to perform timing adjustments. I’d prefer not to keep throwing money at the problem if it’s something relatively simple like a wiring issue. Any advice, suggestions, or critiques would be greatly appreciated. I’ve hit a bit of a wall and would love to get this car back to full operation soon. Thank you for your time and help! |

Did you do a crank sensor re-learn? On the V8's, you always have to do that. Not sure about the four cylinders, but it would make sense. Check the wiring to the crank sensor too.

I tried to do a relearn. However, it states since d t c's are present, the relearn process has failed. It's got me perplexed. I used all the same sensors from my original engine so the p c m would recognize them.

Might be worth checking your VVT solenoids? Did you swap them from the old engine, to the replacement engine? Might be the ones that came with the replacement are bad
