CRITICAL SAFETY ALERT: DIY Anti-theft alarm and starter disable

CRITICAL SAFETY ALERT: Vehicle Control System Warning

DO NOT modify or install kill switches involving Wire #15 (Green/Violet) in the Black Harness connected to the Body Control Module (BCM) under the dash on the Drivers' Side.

DO NOT implement this design DIY Anti-theft alarm and starter disable that uses wire #15.
The design creates a single point of failure that poses significant safety risks.

Wire #15 (Green/Violet) is NOT for the Starter motor control.
Wire #15 controls the ECM, BCM and Relay K2 Run/Crank.

DANGER: Interrupting Wire #15 will:
  1. Disable critical vehicle control systems (ECM/BCM)
  2. Cause complete vehicle shutdown while in operation
The design disables ALL control systems including:
  • Engine
  • Brakes
  • Steering
  • Vehicle controls
  • Air Bags

Are you sure you want to post all those details on a completely open forum that anyone (car thieves) can read without even needing to register?

My thoughts exactly!! A recent sting operation here in South Carolina revealed the thieves were actually targeting FB & Instagram posts to find cars they are going to steal as the "Bounty" for high visibility vehicles is the new "kick". A new-ish ZL1 is sold for $12-15k on the black-market.

Very interested, eager to hear more about it.

Surprised if you can truly keep the cost around $30, but anything under $100 is a good deal for quality DIY solution.

I understand that security by obscurity is ill-advised in general, and it's theoretically possible to design security solutions that can be fully public and still perfectly safe.

However, we're dealing with a 10-year old architecture from GM whose best effort itself is years behind the tip of the spear... you're giving plenty of clues to future carjackers, or, more likely, the schmucks who will build the tools those actual lowlife scumbags will buy and use.

Respectfully disagree. Posting wiring info that readily available from GM in a published service manual isn't exposing any vulnerabilities that thieves don't already know about. All we're talking about here is adding deterrents/impediments to stop an easy exploit that is well known, cloning keys using the OBDII port. Nobody is describing methods to steal a car, only ways to secure one.

Something is better than nothing.

So, if you disconnect the battery, pull the dongle, and then reconnect the battery, is the car vulnerable again?

Was this something you fabricated or is it an off-the-shelf product?

When the dongle is unplugged the signal to the starter relay is disconnected, similar to the successful Ravelco's anti-theft device.
(I appreciate that the Ravelco design can be easily hacked, but a OBDII port is a game changer, especially when using Keep Hope Alive's OBDII Port idea for many reasons)

The wireless relay in the dongle uses the same brilliant concept as the Capricio design where the Capricio relay controls the starter relay coil.

After power is removed from the dongle, the signal to the starter relay coil is also removed.

I hope this helps and don't hesitate asking questions if clarification is needed because this is the documentation for my journal.

I replaced the two dead CR2016 batteries inside the FOB and now the wireless relay works in Latch mode and NC to COM, right out of the box.

Latch Mode is default when power applied with NC to COM relay connections.

Latch Mode means:[LIST][*]Press ON = NO to COM[*]Press OFF = NC to COM

Capricio Design - Note: The factory cut wire connects to the NO and COM on the wireless relay, not the NC and COM contacts.
After conferring with my project partner, J, first... great idea/design.

There are two primary things to consider with this setup that we are curious about.

1. Could this setup potentially leave you stranded? battery dies in the fob, wireless relay coil fails, loss of the fob etc..

2. Accessibility to the starter wires directly, we noticed the shield and we are wondering the strength of that component. Is the epoxy part of preventing the wires from being jumped to reconnect the coil?

3. Once enabled and allowing the starter wire to be connected does the relay go back to a resting state? You may want to consider a way to allow that passively so that excessive usage and early failure is not encountered.

The main difference between our designs is yours requires user action to start the vehicle, including remote starting, while our is passive unless an external device is plugged into the dummy port.

I think there's potential combine the two concepts but it would require slightly different relays, and possibly a second relay. Since ours are timed and customizable. Maybe consider using our timer boards for a limited lockout condition?

All of this, IMHO sounds VERY exciting!!! Please bear with me, because I'm not an electrical guru (or of anything else for that matter).

I'm having a hard time visualizing a lot of this (my fault - not anyone else). I use the OBDII port for an Aeroforce gauge and use it for flashing/scanning tunes from the car. Will something like this still allow for this?

Thank you, and my apologies for not understanding.

OP, suggest a short 2-5 minute video showing the pieces, and the operation of the system. Demonstrate an authorized vs unauthorized attempt to start, armed vs disarmed, etc. Totally up to you, though.
