Painted Engine Cover

Has anyone successfully painted their engine covers? I tried but the paint just peeled right off. I used a plastic adhesion promoter and the Duplicolor paint with a clear coat. However, it just simply peeled off. I was thinking about getting it done at a body shop but I wanted to save some money and do it myself.

That looks really nice! Does it hold up well with heat? Also, what type of paint did you use? The center cover...did you do that as well?

It holds up great ..no issues..I used OEM paint a company I use called paintscratch they can premix it for you or even put in an aerosol can ..the center cover is carbon fiber from a C7 Corvette that I modified.

I think where I messed up on the last attempt was the prep. I’m not sure how to prep this material to hold paint. The last attempt I did about three coats of plastic adhesion promoter, then the base coat of summit white, and then 4 coats of clear. All the same brand which was Duplicolor. It just peeled off easily. It simply would not stick to the plastic. It’s almost like the covers are made of something that is not plastic.

So, what’s the best way to prep this cover material to hold the paint?

So did you not primer before the base coat?

Well, I used the plastic adhesion promoter since it said it was basically a primer. Now I'm wondering if I should have just used a primer made for plastic like you said you did. What was the primer you used?

Thank you! Where did you get it? Also, what should I do to clean the cover before the primer? Last time I just used isopropyl rubbing alcohol. There must be a better way though. Did you sand the surface a little first? I don't want to flatten the texture of the cover.

You could order online or go to any professional paint and body supply store and get it.no need to sand a surface. leave that alone just clean it like you did before with the alcohol.

Thank you so much! I was really bummed the first time because it looked so good until I noticed it peeling in one spot. That primer is kind of pricey so I hope it comes out better. Hopefully that was the problem I was having before and the primer will solve it. I'll let you know if I have any further questions. Thank again!
