Headers, midpipe, rear exhaust recommendations
Hello my fellow ZL1 owners.
Looking into headers, mid pipe, and exhaust for my car but need some advise from the experts. Thinking about American racing long tube headers (I believe I seen a YT vid where the guy said they drop right in without interfering with the steering rack.) but I seen a lot of vids where Kooks seem to be popular? Thoughts? And for the exhaust I was thinking either Corsa, AWE, or Borla? X pipe or H pipe? Since I track the car often I’m looking non Cat version. Preferably with an active exhaust option (hopefully it’ll plug n play with the stock set up) Thanks in advance, Fred (I also had an issue with my E brake set up. I’ll post another thread.) |

I see you are living in the Bay area. Just know the moment you start talking headers you might as well kiss your smog passability goodbye. That being said, you may want to consider doing a custom double helix X pipe because the placement of the X in these catback systems is utter crap and the X needs to be placed closer towards the front of the vehicle. Where the secondary cats end, right after the bends on both sides that lead to the tunnel, right there. I would do Corsa personally.

If you're going to track a car in CA, invest in some Laguna pipes and keep the rest of the car stock.

A few tips if I may... 1. ARH + HF cats = Great choice 2. Cat Back of your choice... 3. Take the system to a local muffler shop, and have them weld in some V bands for easy future service / removal / install and leak prevention. Also have them weld in a bung for future wide band. 4. Send all components out to get high temp coated. 5. Install BMR motor mounts at the same time... Extra work, but you will be happier in the long run.

Combine a moderate cam with Kooks headers, crimp deletes and axle back and you've got a car you definitely would not want as your daily driver which is my car

After having this same debate with myself for the past few months, watching youtube videos and reading the forums.. last week I ordered LTHs from CSP. They are designed by CSP and now made by Kooks for the best fitment of all the headers. Extra clearance for plug wires, steering shaft bolt, and starter. They are getting the Jet Hot Extreme Coating right now.
I decided to go with the cat delete connection pipes, but can add the Ultra Cats from CSP down the road if and when needed. I am keeping the factory x-pipe and NPP suitcase for now as well. Once I hear the change in tone and noise level, I will decide whether to keep the factory or go with a cat back system... most likely keeping some type of NPP option. Many Zl1's race at our local track with LTH and the factory NPP exhaust although I don't plan on tracking it. I say that now lol Once the headers arrive from being coated, I'll have them installed along with the Big Gulp, Soler LT5 ported throttle body, Flex Fuel kit, and dyno tuned. I already installed the P3 Gauge in the AC vent to monitor the E content and now I'm debating on running the wide band kit since it's plug and play with the P3 |
