First Time Running Track Tires, Advice?

I have a track day tomorrow, and I'll be running Hoosier R7s. This will be my first time driving on anything other than a street tire. I had Tire Rack heat cycle them for me, so I'm assuming they're ready to run a multi-session day.

I'm thinking a good target hot tire pressure should be around 38-39 psi.

Should I run with a little extra oil? I've seen people blame the wet sump system for oil starvation when running slicks, but I don't know if that's a fact or a myth. If it were a big issue surely the folks at GM would have put a mention in their performance driving supplement, right?

I'm getting an alignment tomorrow before the event. I've modified my front struts and I'm thinking I should be able to get -3.0 or better. In the back, my plan is to max out the camber keeping the toe at 0.1. I'm guessing that'll be around -1.7.

Anyone have any words of wisdom to share?

38-39 is too high if you ask me. I’d be aiming closer to a street tire pressure, 33-35 hot.

Slicks (especially non-DOT’s) do better if you gradually install them. Meaning... methodically work up to pace, don’t go super easy on your outlap then balls to the wall on lap 2. You don’t need more than -3.0 camber up front for slicks on our cars (yes I know camber recommendations by tire manufacturers).

It's amazing the things you can find if you use the Google.

http://hoosiertire.com/images/conten...s/TCTR7_A7.pdf

Recommended tire pressure for a car over 3,000 #s is 40 to 42 hot, starting at 30 to 34 cold.

Yeah, no thanks. Surprised they don’t have different recommendations for R7 versus A7. Those sound like autocross #’s. Interesting, says to call rep for recommended cold pressure on vehicle over 3k. I can’t even fathom running 40psi+ on track. Guess I’m glad I don’t buy Hoosiers.

Yep...those recommendations are pretty close for the R7's on a 3,900lb Camaro. I used to run the Hoosiers and they liked 39lbs hot.

Far different than the Pirelli DH slicks where your 33-35 is the sweet spot. I actually like 33.5lbs. The degree of precision makes me feel like I know what I'm doing....

Amazing to me how different they are. The Hoosiers are much lower profile tires, so perhaps that's why.

OP, I'd start at 34 cold....let them down to 39 immediately after you pit the first session, and you likely will need to do that the next session too. Then s/b good to go. That's my experience and $0.02. YMMV.

I haven't seen any oil pressure or temp issues running DH slicks on some high G tracks....don't think you need the extra oil.

I run the factory recommend track alignment and it works great.

Have a great track event!

33-35 is what I like my street tires at hot. Non-DOT slicks- as you mention, like lower pressures. I try for 31-32 hot in my car on PZero DH’s. I knew Hoosiers like more pressure, but 40 just seems nuts. I’ve never thought Hoosiers were worth the $ from a cost/longevity standpoint. $110 per tire second hand PZero DH on the ther hand...

I'll try a bit lower pressure on Monday at Autobahn in Joliet...see if your 31-32 works even better....thanks for the tip!

Yep, Pirelli DH scrubs at $100ish per tire is like candy....

Scrub Pirelli's, which are widely available, are with out question the single best value going for HPDE enthusiasts! Take a look at Todd's website to see what he has available. Generally the best selection is the beginning of the season after race teams are finished testing for the year, however he buys literally thousands of tires a year.

The track day went well. I ran my best time of 1:55.26 at PittRace, which is moving pretty good. I shaved ~4.5 seconds from my best Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G3 time.

I started the first session at 34 psi. After 15 minutes I was at 48 psi. I would have came off earlier, but I didn't know the pressures had climbed so much. I had forgotten to relearn my TPMS sensors when I swapped wheels and tires. With new tires and no pressure readings, I was flying blind.

Anyway, I dropped the pressures down to 38 and they stayed within a few psi the next two sessions.

Here's a video from my last session. Fastest lap starts at ~10:27.

Thanks to everyone who provided input.

Yeah. PittRace is a serious track. People are slowly catching on to how great it is. In years past it was only half the track it is now. The owner is sinking money into it like crazy, turning it into a world-class track. Each year the list of major events grows.
