A10 Spilling Fluid at Track Day

My A10 had performed well at 4 or 5 days at COTA. Midway through the weekend at Cresson, my A10 hit 275 Degrees and started dripping Fluid. First, did it overheat because of a transmission issue. Is there a hose that allows the transmission fluid to spill over if it gets to hot. Is there a better choice for trans fluid than the standard trans fluid?

Would already be at GM but I didn't want my car sitting in shop till next week...

Thought I would ask the forum your thoughts

Might have been overfilled from the factory. If so, it’s a known problem. I haven’t heard of it resulting in a spillover, but it would make sense if the A10 was overfilled. The pressure would have no where to go except pushing out of the seals.

Were you the zl1 with the zl1 1le wing? I was in the purple-black wrapped SS 1LE. The weekend at cresson was awesome, sorry to hear the transmission was giving you problems.

I was in the red ZL1 1LE. I wondered where you went sorry to hear about your issues. :( Take it to the dealer. They will sort it put. Cresson was epic. I struggled for grip on the 1.7. Back to the Goodyears I go! The 3.1 on Monday was super fun. Hope to see you guys in the future.

I haven't heard anything regarding an overheating line?? I saw where the tranny fill plug is used to release any over fill & act as the fill line itself when at the right temp...wondering if the cap came loose / off???

Was the trans fluid adjusted for track usage? Car track prep'd? Just asking because that could have cause it. Curious to know what you ultimately find out.

All auto transmissions will have a vent tube, It's not necessarily for fluid to spill out but for pressure to be equalized in the transmission as temperatures heat up if fluid temperature gets too hot fluid can push itself out of the vent tube

yes, it will push fluid out of the vent tube if overfilled and not the “seals”. My guess is the level is probably fine now. Follow procedures and check level to be sure. YouTube has a nice tutorial about the fluid level in all of the new auto transmissions.

That is one of the things GM says can happen due to the fluid being overfilled. Here’s a page from the service bulletin on this issue. And for what it’s worth, my car does not fall under this bulletin, but was overfilled.

I hope gm handled the people that overfilled these or at least the people who were responsible. I have fired people for overfilling vehicles at my shop. Amazing how just double checking makes all the difference. We pay alot of Hard earned money for these cars.

Make sure temp is 209* (not 175, not 230.....209 give or take a couple). Pull drain fill plug while car is running on lift, let any fluid drain out. Replace plug once it stops. Simple deal. Mine had 1/2–3/4qt extra in it.
