Black Crystal Seal after clay bar?

Hi All,

I'm just curious if it would be appropriate to re-apply black crystal seal after a hand wash and clay bar? I previously used it in May. The car is not a daily and lives a lot in the garage.

On a side note how do you know when to re-apply black crystal sea?

Thank you

You should lay on a layer of polish before you put on the Crystal seal, after the Clay. Blackfire "total polish and seal" is a good one that goes with Crystal seal.

You should apply Crystal seal anywhere between three and six months, whenever you feel like it.

The total polish and seal is good stuff. The blackfire seal is amazing. You really should look into the clay bar glove. it is amazing. You can clay your car in the same amount of time it takes to wash it and its safe on every part of the car. Even the glass.

Get the nanoskin glove

Before you apply the sealant, you want to wipe the paint down with either IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) diluted with distilled water 10-15%, or Carpro Eraser.

What this will do is remove any residue left from your clay lube, oils, or soap residue on the surface, giving your sealant the best possible surface to bond to.

This step is critical to get maximum longevity out of your sealant.

Think of sticking 2 pieces of tape to something. One area is completely clean and free of any residue. The other is clean, but has some residue on it. Which piece will bond better? Same concept when applying protection.

Prepping it properly before applying you should get at least 4 months out of it on a garage queen.

You'll know when it's gone because the surface will no longer bead or sheet water.

Since your car is a garage queen, I'd highly recommend Ultima Waterless Wash Plush concentrate and a good California duster for cleaning the dust off, which with a garage queen, this is mostly what you'll get on the car.

Many people say the CD is a bad product, that it will scratch paint. It will if used improperly. Here's how to use it right.

Doesn't matter what clay bar you used, once you clay a car, you're still putting some scratches down while picking the debris up. Seal it now and you're sealing in the small scratches, so it's always recommended to polish those out, then seal.

That makes perfect sense. Thank you.

Does the CarPro Ech2o compare to Optimum Waterless wash recommended in the video in terms of lubrication properties(lubricocity)?

I've never seen one that was substantially better than the others, they all work really well. I've used about five, the echo2 is different in that it's got silica for a bit more protection. They all exhibit lubricity.

I'll second this.

The ultima or optimum is a better choice if you have a regular polymer sealant, the ECH20 is designed for coatings or silica based products like Reload, Hydro2, Hydrofoam, etc.

Ultima also has a newer version that has Acrylic in it. I haven't used it, but it's supposed to provide a little more protection then the original.

The benefit to Ultima, Optimum, and ECH20 is they are concentrates, so your cost is much lower versus buying pre mixed products. Your paying much more that way.

I get the Ultima on sale at AG for about $15 w/ free shipping on one of their 25% off free shipping sales. Distilled water is 88c per gallon at Wal-Mart. So for around $19, I get 5.5 gallons of solution.

The Optimum is also a good value to mix waterless wash/detail spray/clay lube.

I get my Carpro stuff from Corey only, because he has helped me when I've ran across difficult paint to polish several times.

He has good sales on Black Friday/Cyber Monday, and occasionally throughout the year. Of course you can get 15% off any time using code 15off at Carpro USA.

For the OP, if you clayed the car in May and it's a garage queen, it's highly unlikely that it will need claying again in 4-6 months.
An easy way to check is do the baggie test after washing.
When it's time to re-apply, all you'll need to do is a strip wash, IPA or Eraser wipe down, and apply your sealant.

I have a bottle of Chemical Guys V36 and V38. Would either one of those work?

I'm thinking just the V38 as I only have 1500 miles on the car and no swirl marks.

Agree on the Ech20...on a different level if you are using Silica based products, awesome stuff!
