Oil Pressure Max Out on Hard Acceleration?

Is this normal? When 'nailing' it, I notice the oil pressure gauge pegs 80...I thought I had seen another thread on here about that but the search didn't bring it up..

I've noticed it as well. I wonder if it is limited to the V6.

I have the AutoEnginuity ScanTool with the GM package. I will hook it up this weekend and monitor and record oil pressure and we will see!

Oil pressure is always high like that. Was the same on the lfx as well...

Good to know...

Yeah I originally Posted on this a while back I never got any information from dealers or anything else, Dealers stated other v6 cars did same thing so it was normal. And unless you have the tech package with the display I don't think you can even see oil pressure only oil temp.

Here is my Original post with youtube link.

It is literally in the 4600 to 4700 RPM and up it just maxes out the gauge does not matter if you do slow or hard acceleration you can go to 4700 RPM and hold it there and it will stay pegged to the max.

Yep, that's the thread I had seen before and what mine seems to do. I'm guessing it must be normal.

I've had my car in recently for oil change, then an O2 sensor, then a check engine light which turned out to be a fuel trim cylinder balance error (bad gas supposedly), and they say everything checks out now. I guess I won't worry about it unless someone here comes up with some new info...

Wonder what mine is reading. Everyone commenting here seems to be in warm climates compared to me. (Michigan) On cold start in cold weather (35 F) oil press is pushing 55 psi on mine @ idle. Drops to about 40 psi when warm.

Tomorrow morning it will be 36 where I live.

My psi is usually around 55 when cold. After warming up it will drop down to around 28.

Bear in mind I am running a full synthetic oil.

The issue does not occur on cold start or idle, Its when your RPM go over 4600

I was making a general point that on a cold startup oil pressure on mine is 55 psi, so seeing above 80 psi @ high throttles doesn't surprise me and/or isn't very concerning in my opinion. Sorry for lack of clarification on original post.

This is exactly what my V6 is doing. I took it into the dealership and they put a manual gauge on the car and told me that the oil pressure at idle and at 2000 rpm is too high. They have ordered a new oil pump and have the car in the shop over the long weekend while I bomb around town in the courtesy car... a 2014 Chevy Cruze -- AAACK!

It would be interesting to see if anyone out there does NOT see this happening.

If this is normal, I wonder if it's related to the variable valve timing. I think that hydraulic pressure (oil pressure) is used to change the timing. Maybe to do the timing change, the pressure has to be raised and that is what the gauge is showing.

Does anyone have any technical knowledge about how the VVT works?

I really want to revive this thread I have been to 2 dealerships now and no one can give me info or wants to address this. I have now seen videos of other v6 models not doing this.

There has to be something in the gauge reading I cannot imagine the oil pressure is actually going above 80 psi.

And you dont even have to hammer on it just very light acceleration once you reach that 4600-5k thresh hold it just pegs it. Its bothered me so much I don't use the media display anymore so I cant see that gauge.
