Can you wax the CF hood insert?

Saw a short blip in the manual stating to not wax the Carbon Fiber hood insert. This makes no sense to me as it is likely gel coat covered and I wax my boat all the time with no ill effects. Is this a liability statement from Chevy or real deal?

This guy says wax it. http://www.detailedimage.com/Ask-a-P...-carbon-fiber/

What say this forum?

thanks.

I believe that it is similar to the c7 corvette carbon fiber roof and hood inserts, they are both clear coated and you Can was them.

I was a little surprised at what I read in our owner's manual about waxing our cars.
That said, I've ceramic coated the entire car including the ceramic fiber extractor.

the page after you posted is confusing, first column says not to use probably second column says it's OK.… LOL... It comes from dealers using the poly glycoat type coatings of the 80s and 90s that didn't work very well and GM had a problem.

You can seal/wax the carbon fiber all you want, what you shouldn't do is use a cleaner wax or a very strong rubbing compound/polish, just wipe it down with alcohol/water and put on your favorite sealant or wax.

It does have clear on it, but typically the clear coat on carbon fiber is thinner than that on paint. You'd probably want to use less harsh polishes/pads on it than the rest of the car when buffing.

You're right, it is confusing! My intended point is our owner's manual isn't much help on the waxing question. I've found several instances where the manual contradicts itself in other areas as well. Overall, it's poorly written in my view.

Absolutely wax it. It has a clear coating and needs protection. I don't use a machine on it, just the applicator pad by hand.

Just did today. Put down a coat of black lught, jetseal, then lava lumious glow was on the whole car. Used Black luminous glow on all the black pieces including the insert.

im surprised the manual recommends using a chamois as they will cause scratches as opposed to a microfiber

I agree, seems GM's tech writers may want to come into the modern age of proper paint care. I air dry my car and then use super soft MF towels with Adam's detail spray.

Just making a suggestion here. On carbon fiber parts for aircraft they cannot use traditional wax. There are a few companies out there that make a spray cleaner with wax that is made specifically for the aircraft industry and we use this on all the airplane CF parts religiously. I don't want to become an advertisement as there are many out there but I use Aero Cosmetics...the blue stuff. I get it at pilot shops but I am certain Amazon sells by now.

This has been discussed a few times at the corvette fests in BG with GM staff. All CF parts are coated with a very expensive clear coat that is UV resistant. Any non abrasive wax or seal will do.
