1ss vs 1le

Getting close to pulling the trigger on a used 1le. My limit is 30k if I can find one. It will be my dd with a few track days a year. Just wondering if anyone has compared laptimes of a 1 or 2 ss with the same tires as a 1le. I am aware of all the other differences just wandering what they equate to in lap times.

I would imagine a 1ss with mag ride and same rubber as a 1le vs a 1le would be very close. I'd be curious to see as well.

As someone will quickly say. It's all in the driver.

Put me in a ZL1 and guaranteed I will be slower than most people..LOL

Check out motor trend or car and driver. Etc. They did a lot of track testing with Camaros.

Really the only thing you couldn't easily bolt on is the e-diff. I'm not sure how much of a difference there would be between an SS with good tires and stock 1LE (I would guess 2-3 seconds in capable hands).

That being said for track duty I think the Recaro's and brakes are huge improvements (on top of the more obvious tire/suspension improvements).

I think at the end of the day you would spend more to upgrade an SS to similar components that are stock on the 1LE than the initial price difference. It's up to you if the feel/lap time improvements are worth it at that point.

I can’t answer your direct question, but I have gone from 1SS to SS 1LE just recently. I also just did an autox in the 1LE, too.

I wrote in a little detail somewhere else, but to summarize:

The SS 1LE is more than stiffer suspension, wider tires and bigger brakes...

It’s that, plus filling in everything in between with optimized adjustments.

I was shocked on my first drive of my 1LE at how different the car just felt compared to my 1SS. Literally felt like a different car.

At the autocross, the 1LE is as capable, completely stock, as a decently built STP/STU Camaro.

If you track a lot or are a real driving enthusiast, the 1LE is your bag of chips.

Yeah. I’ll also chime in for what it’s worth. I had a 2016 2SS Camaro with magnetic ride and now I have a 2018 Camaro 1SS 1LE and the handling, composure and feature differences are quite dramatic. There’s no way you wouldn’t like a 1LE after driving one.

You cannot reasonably add the braking and traction control calibrations to a non-1le. That means that the regular 1ss will suffer from ice mode while the 1le will not.

You can make a car with a traditional diff every but as fast, but it’ll cost you close to 10k to make the abs work as well as it does on the 1le.

If you’re going drag racing or cruising, get a non-1le. If you’re planning on wheeling it, get the 1le.

I had a 2ss with RE71R's (sticky tires) and an agressive alignment, I cant compare laptimes before and after, but I will say that tires were a huge improvement. With the adjustable shocks it was pretty damn good. I could hang with expensive, so called sports cars in the mountains, but when you go to the track thats where the 1LE will shine.

If I were you I'd wait and get a 1LE. Better brakes, e diff, wider rims, better shocks spring rates etc... Why make your life harder than it has to be, just get the right car the first time. For what it's worth... I sold my 2SS to buy a 1LE, I'm just waiting for prices to come down a little more. If you will ever go to the track just get a 1LE and be done. It needs nothing....

Excellent question. If it does the calibration would surely differ as 1LE PTM works in concert with different E-LSD modes depending on which PTM mode is selected.

Bottom line for me: 1LE = C7 GS except for 6 vs 7 gear box mechanically. Thats what makes it so special.

Locally used 1LE's are few and far between, and none listed under $36,000.
Time will bring the prices down, be on the look out for a dealer not knowing what they are selling and be ready to pounce.
I saw a couple used 1LE's during my search, a couple dealers knew what they had and had them listed at $40k or more. One or two had them listed at $33-34k.

Good luck in your hunt!
