Coating should go directly on the surface that's been polished and cleaned, nothing between it and the paint.

For DIY I assume we are talking about ease of installation. There is nothing easier than correct and prep with Car Pro Essence with the correct pads. It also is the coating primer, so after wipe off the surface is ready for coating. Here are some links to each product.

The easiest coating to apply is Polish Angel Viking coat.

Applies like a wax, removes the same.

Here is also some after care that I have started.

I would go with CarPro. A ceramic coating will still get swirls, but Mike Phillips said something like the coating is the sacrificial lamb. Coating gets the swirls, not the paint. With CarPro, they have polishes like Car Pro Essence Plus, which is a non-abrasive polish to remove swirls from just the coating. Coatings can get swirled up within 3 months.

I have not been impressed with coatings. I think they are expensive and over hyped. They still get swirls (that still blows my mind!)

My coated cars have been coated for over a year and still look fantastic, how you clean them, as any LSP is crucial. For the inevitable stuff, Car Pro essence plus a god send.

Here is my car at 1.5 years with Kamikaze coatings.

I have coated many customers cars, mostly Optimum and CarPro products. They SWEAR they haven't gone to the swirl wash. I still see swirled coatings.

I detail and polish show cars. My own car is coated with Opti-Gloss Coat. It is garaged and washed with best technique known to detailing. And the top of my trunk has some swirls.

I don't subscribe to the theory that you can coat a car and forget about it.

Check out the autogeek.net forum and read everything that Mike Phillips writes. He has probably polished more vehicles than anyone on Earth.

These are my opinions from experience

Torq Torqx Random Orbital Polisher good
Honeydew Snow Foam Auto Wash good
Butter Wet Wax junk
Silk Shine Sprayable Dressing great
Signature Series Window Cleaner junk
Diablo Wheel & Rim Cleaner good but expensive

VSS Scratch and Swirl Remover junk

JetSeal Sealant and Paint Protectant ok

Pete’s ’53 Black Pearl Carnauba Paste Wax great

V32 Optical Grade Extreme Compound
V34 Optical Grade Hybrid Compound
V36 Optical Grade Cutting Polish
V38 Optical Grade Final Polish
All junk
These are just my opinions. Your mileage may vary.

If you are going to polish, you will need some detailing clay and clay lube (or synthetic clay block, mitt or glove.)

Yea I can see the average person swirling it out, but the average carefully washed car is going to catch a few. I'm super OCD about how I wash, and especially media used, as well as media condition IE look at it for contamination after washing, store in a sealed container, inspect if before use, inspect it eash time before it hits a panel. I'm sure if I searched I could find a few, but nothing worth being surprised about. Any I have found have been easily repaired with Essence plus. So I think for the OCD person a properly washed coating is still the way to go. The car pictured traveled over 10,000 miles, was carefully maintained, like I said there is probably a blemish here and there, but I will get at least another 1.5 years before re-coating. And it will look pretty much as pictured the whole time.

As you said they will still get them, and some people will hammer them in a matter or months. My own kid did that to his car. Corrected with FG400, finished with Essence, coated with Gtechniq C1/EXO. A month later even after showing him how, it looked like he used a brick to wash it. I asked, and he just dry wiped it with a micro one day because he was in a hurry..... I was like WTF were you thinking. Well it least it's a test mule I guess. Point is though, I showed him everything I knew, he managed to undo a weekend worth of work in a couple of minutes with about the worst technique known to man. The more prepared and thought full you are the better the results.
