New Owner Question

I just got a 2017 SS and I'm loving it more every day! This is my first post.

Got a question for you guys about engine break-in. My salesman says that some guys do the first oil change @ 500 miles. Nothing in the manual about that.

Do you guys think this is necessary or even a good idea?

The hottest debate is first oil change at 500, or 1000, or 1500.

Invest the $ 100 and get the oil changed.

Your car should have come with two oil changes for free, I believe all Chevys do. I always change the oil in a new engine at about 1000 miles, I think it's cheap insurance. Just go get a free one at the dealer.

I wonder if they'll do the free oil changes earlier than the 7500/15000 interval?

My dealer had no problem at all doing it at 1200 miles.

Yeah, I've got the two free ones coming to me. Haven't asked yet if they will do it, but I don't see why they wouldn't. Oil's probably cheaper now than it will be 6-8 months from now.

pretty sure that when you spend that much on a car oil would have to get real high before they said no...LOL

If you're planning to go full synthetic, you may have to pay for the difference in the cost of the oil. My local dealer upcharged me $30 for Mobil 1 and filled it to the middle of the hash marks. Yes, acceptable, but not ideal.

Factory fill on 2017 cars and trucks (except Corvette) is now the next gen Dexos1 full synthetic 5w30 (or 0w20 depending on the vehicle). GM dropped the Dexos1 synthetic blend back in June 2016. GM is moving ahead by almost two years to the new ILSAC GF-6 oil specs. GF-6 targets GDI (Direct Injection Gas engines) and timing chain component wear/life, and turbocharged engines as the improvement areas over the GF-5 spec.

Around 1800 miles, haven't done an oil change yet.

Lots of debate/opinions about this for sure. I had mine changed at 4K. It's not break in oil anymore!
