Engine Sound Tube / Interior Sound Enhancer Photos - 2016 New Feature

At Camarofest saw the new 2016 SS. They were just getting display set up (son and I got there VERY early).
The car was locked and asked if they would let me sit in it. And sure enough they got the key fob out and unlocked. Height of top of dash is way lower compared to Gen5. The console is higher and perfect arm-rest configuration.

Asked Tech if he could pop the hood. And saw a large white tube connected to the air intake. Asked Tech what that was for. He describes it as a sound enhancer for interior. It pipes noise directly from the inside of the air intake over to the cabin through the firewall. He also explained that it pulls air out of the cabin helping interior ventilation when the windows are closed ... the air is sucked directly into the engine via that same tube.

Pictures -
View from front of car showing white tube connected to air intake:

Also- notice the wiper Arms/Balde holders, and cowl air intakes for interior looks about the same as Gen5 (intake vents in similar location).

View from side of car:

Nice color :-)

The car/engine noise for the 2016 SS is WAY different from my 2014 SS with factory NPP Dual-Mode exhaust. Since this is very subjective I won't say what my opinion is (better or worse) ;-)

The two Air Extractors "horns" in the SS hood show up better in person compared to pics here and other pics I've seen.
Trunk opening, trunk interior, and trunk trim pieces near hinges look almost the same as Gen5.

Total of four 2016's on display (LT, SS, Convertible).

Thumbs up

The 5.0 mustangs have this feature as well, most people delete it when installing an after market CAI, or even after just a muffler swap.

A lot of attention has been put on keeping the cabin quiet, and the side effect is no longer being able to hear the engine while driving. This helps alleviate that.

Thanks for that info. One thing though - I would hope it doesn't pull (presumably unfiltered) air from the cabin directly into the engine. If so, removing that would be my fist mod

Don't think cabin air will need filtering. Maybe if you are chain smoking with the windows up or have an open bag of flour with the windows down lol

Not sure the tech knew what the sound tube did and did not do. None I know of suck air.

So which one sounded better? Can you describe the differences?

This. The tube wouldn't work too well as a sound conductor if the air was going from cabin to engine. That would be like a trumpet player sucking the air in through his mouthpiece to play - ridiculous.

And if air was being sucked into the engine through that tube, you could never really set the HVAC to a recirc setting since new air would have to be entering the cabin all the time to feed the tube.

If it's anything like the 5.0's there is a massive amount of foam "filler" in the tube itself. Removal of this will increase the induction sound transfer from IM to cabin.

I'd be curious to know your thoughts on the sound differences, but also, I don't think we yet know what to expect, as in, can starting the car up in standard, or sport, or track modes, affect how it sounds? Or is it like the 5th gen NPP and its always open at start up and idle.

That would hugely affect the difference you might have heard if modes DO affect start up sound.

I doubt it would suck air from the cabin. This air would be un-metered, as it enters the intake after the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF Sensor). Perhaps there is a flexible barrier at the entrance to the tube that enables sound waves to travel without any net flow. Or perhaps some kind of foam that allows sound waves to travel without any net flow.

It can't both act as a sound enhancer and redirect airflow to/from the MAF. Sound is compressed air waves. The kind of closed loop feedback he's implying would ruin your ability to sample sound accurately if air is allowed to rush back and fourth from the cabin. Like others kind of alluded to, its like trying to suck air out of an instrument vs playing it by compressing air through it. Sounds like he was perhaps confused. I can see multiple tubes doing this, but to claim one tube does both things doesn't make logical sense.

I go with confusion. Waves, whether sound or other travel in one direction until meeting a barrier such as another sound wave, which is the reason for resonators, where uncomfortable sound waves by design cancel each other out.

Sound waves can and do travel through oncoming air unless that air is oncoming at mach speed. Some of you guys may be confusing the Doppler effect with sound interference where off sync waves cancel each other out.
