3rd Shift to be eliminated at LGR

GM announced today that LGR (Lansing Grand River) and Lordstown will both have their 3rd shifts eliminated.

All 4 models at the two plants (ATS, CTS, Camaro and Cruze) have over 100 days supply.

Sadly that is 810 hourly and 29 salaried Jobs effective January 16th.

http://www.autonews.com/article/2016...-ohio-michigan

General Motors today said it will cut more than 2,000 factory jobs because of slowing demand for cars but plans to invest $900 million to prepare for new products at three plants.

GM said it is eliminating the third shift at a Lansing, Mich., plant that makes the Chevrolet Camaro, Cadillac ATS and Cadillac CTS. The move affects 810 hourly jobs and 29 salaried positions, effective Jan. 16.

The Chevrolet Cruze plant in Lordstown, Ohio, will lose its third shift on Jan. 23. The cutback affects 1,202 hourly and 43 salaried jobs.

U.S. light-vehicle sales have dropped 0.3 percent this year, but car deliveries have slipped 9.7 percent. GM’s U.S. car sales off 7.5 percent this year, partly reflecting a pullback in daily rental shipments to focus on retail business.

GM had more than 100 days’ supply of all four nameplates as of Nov. 1, according to the Automotive News Data Center. A spokesman said the decision relates to the U.S. market’s shift toward light trucks and was not connected to Tuesday’s presidential election. Labor laws require companies to give at least 60 days’ notice for mass layoffs.

At the same time, GM said planned investments at three plants will retain 784 jobs in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana for work on undisclosed new products. The company said it will spend $668 million at its Toledo Transmission Operations plant in Ohio, $211 million at the Lansing plant that’s losing its third shift and $37 million at a metal-casting plant in Bedford, Ind.

Absolutely no surprise. I feel sorry for the affected employees but GM should have done something long before now to avoid getting here in the first place.

I wonder if this will effect QC? Hopefully they'll keep the good employees but that might mean to them the most experienced/higher paid ones could get the axe.

Hows that higher profit margin on lower sales numbers working out for them? Oh wait we only care about corporate bottom line here.....

I honestly was surprised when LGR added a 3rd shift.

QC is done at a different location. Some cars may stay parked at the plant, but overall if issues are found, they get addressed offsite.

As I said in another post, Trump will propose a 35% Tariff next year on imported cars, the auto industry might have to rethink its position. Don't think they are already preparing for a big change in the U.S.

I thought QC issues were resolved there. During the factory tour there was a whole area dedicated to this. It was partitioned off for different needs i.e. electrical, body work etc. Maybe I missunderstood, though. Who else was at the tour that knows what I'm referring to? (Off topic I know; but now I'm curious.) On topic: I hate to see anyone facing job elimination or layoff. Here in the metro Detroit area it's not uncommon. But that doesn't make it hurt any less when there are bills to pay.

Not true......

QC is done at the plant.... Before it leaves the buidling.....

In initial Camaro production ramp up, some issues were fixed offsite, this is not the case now....

In my mind there never should have been a 2016 Model. They should have made it a 2017 and made a bigger thing out of the 50th. Brought everything online at once

I don't think that would have made a difference if the 6th gen that we have was released a year later. I still strongly believe that the reason the 6th gen is failing to sell is because its design was too conservative. Sure it may outperform the other ponies in every way, but it still looks like a 5th gen so much that the average joe who doesn't geek over cars like we do wont notice a difference; its a played out style. They went evolutionary over revolutionary like ford, and to make matters worse, they have done little to nothing to advertise the new gen Camaro to a broader audience other than to the car enthusiasts. Its not just enthusiasts that buy these cars.

And many still defend the visibility issue and write it off as a non-issue, when it clearly is for many others, especially the unexperienced drivers.

Then, theres the huge price difference between the Camaro and the competitors... and the fact that most dealerships are ordering fully loaded $40k v6's and $50k v8's, dooming sales from the start. Just look at all the 20% or so price drops going around... its truly embarrassing.

Your theory has been proven wrong. The sales of 6gen have jumped dramatically with the 20% off. Its the price, always has been.
