Too much oil?
Having a slight panic attack over here. Despite all the reccomendations to check oil levels during break in, I just checked it today for the first time. Seems I'm sitting high and must have been for minimum 1,000 miles. The only time the car was touched was for this pit stop thing the dealer does to top off fluids and check cars maybe a month after you buy them. They credit your account with $50 towards any service in the future just for going.. so I figure why not.
I can't imagine the car coming with too much oil from the factory so I have to assume I was incorrectly topped off during the pit stop. I think I threw out the paperwork so I can't see right now if any note was made. Pit stop had to be at like 300 miles and I'm at 1500 now. Oil is above hatch marks after car sat for 2 hours. It's hard to see exactly how much higher but it looks to be at maybe the top of the piece that has the hatch marks in it. Right before it becomes the braided wire. Maybe even a little into the wire. How much damage could have been caused? How would I know? How much extra oil does it take to cause damage?

I take it that since it's hard to see, that the oil is still newish clean. You shouldn't have anything to worry about. Just drain a bit.
overfilling is bad because oil will not be able to fully drain back into the pan and so may lead to some oil not getting filtered. If you're still rocking clean oil, not much dirt/metal has had a chance to build up in the oil to matter. |

General rule of thumb: you're don't have to worry about too much oil until it spits the dipstick. Meaning oil coming out of the dipstick.
But I assume we learned our lesson here? LESSON :Anytime a dealer goes near your car, before you leave the service lane, walk around the car, check all the gauges/pressures and the check oil. |

The problem with too much oil is cavitation.
This is caused by the crankshaft coming into contact with the oil and churning it causing air to be mixed into the oil. This results in small air bubbles being mixed in with the oil and loss of lubrication. This will definitely damage an engine. Just how bad depends on how much cavitation you have. Most likely damaged are the bearings. Your probably ok if your not hearing any knocking. However, if it's starts to knock say in the next couple thousand miles you know why. The only real way to know if it effected the engine is to drop the pan and pull the caps.

The 2SS has the same LT1 V8 engine my 2014 C7 Z51 Vette had except that it was a dry sump that had more oil capacity. If you're talking the 2SS the engine holds 10 qts of oil and it's listed in the back of your manual.
