Motor Trend Best Driver's Car - 9/22

Just FYI: Looks like 9/22 is the date when MT will announce the best driver's car (according to Chris Walton's Instagram). Hopefully the full article and videos are available on that date as well w/ 1LE performance # and lap times.

I'm still curious if Car and Driver has a 6th gen in their lighting lap competition. Hopefully they test both a base SS and 1LE.

I was going to call and talk to the motortrend people for not cancelling my subscription and renewing it 4 months later somehow to the on demand app and realized that this month is when it comes out.

I shall wait until next month to do so now

I wonder if we'll see first drive or instrumented tests online prior to that date?

Motor Trend on Demand just posted the M4 GTS lap time of Leguna Seca. 1:37.66. They said the Camaro SS 1LE was basically the exact same time. The GT350R was 1.6 seconds faster.

Correct. Just FYI the 5th gen Z/28 ran 1:37.82

This car will be the best performance bargain on the market!

Those are amazing times for the Camaro and GT350R!

With Trofeo R's! And it's barely a street setup!

I'm curious what the standard GT350 (non R) would run.

Yep! Imagine what this 1LE would do with Michelin Sport Cup 2's or Trofeo R's

I'm curious why people continue to believe the 1LE would perform better on different tires. We now have some evidence it can match the Z/28 that featured some of the most hard core track tires ever mounted to a street car, and the M4 GTS which features the much loved Sport Cup 2's. Sorry but there is just no way the 1LE could do that unless the Goodyears it runs on are pretty stout as well. Your not going to get that lap time in a 3650 lb car with 455 HP unless the tires are very good.

I agree completely! I think these new F1 super car tire 3s are way better than people might think! And the PTM is setup for those tires, not Sport cup 2s or Trofeo Rs, so I really dont think those tires would be much better. Now if you swapped the brakes for the Z/28s carbon ceramics that might help a good bit!

Lol you guys are nuts if you don't think tires would make a substantial difference. We are talking probably a second or two per lap minimum.

Because tires with more grip mean you can brake latter going into the corner and carry more speed through the corner. The fact that they were able to achieve the time that they got on non R tires is a testament to how good the car is setup. However it would put down a faster lap time with stickier tires on its wheels, that is just a fact of life.

All GM really needs to do is take the LT1 engine, rev it out to 7,000rpms with some head and came work to break 500BHP. Some carbon Ceramic brakes, R tires, stripped the interior and they would have a blazing fast Z/28 Camaro probably at around $50,000 (might even come in the 3,500 pound range).

My point is we have no idea how 'sticky' the supercar 3's are yet, as the 1LE is the first car to use them. There is no way that lap time is purely from 'setup', which I assume you mean as 'well balanced'. You can't get that lap time without grip, and grip comes from the tires.
