2SS Rear Shelf speakers into a 1SS
Any reason why the 2SS rear deck speakers GN #23125292 won't work if installed in a 1SS?
I would just tap into the amp output for the front speakers and run it to the deck ....

What do you plan to plug into them since there's no speaker wires there?

Finally, others have reported that it is very difficult to get speakers in and out of those 6x9 cutouts on the parcel shelf. There is speculation that Chevy drops in the speakers before the rear glass is installed. |

+1 on removing them...not seen anyone say it was remotely easy. Probably easier to cut out your own holes for speakers.

My point was trying to get the OP to think about what he was doing and think this through logically. SuperSound pretty much summed it up though. You can't just put 2SS rear deck speakers in and things will work just fine. There's nothing to plug them into which means you're going to have to either pick off the rear speaker wiring or parallel the front speaker wiring. Neither of which are a good idea because A) the rear speakers don't receive all the information of the fronts and they are underpowered so they won't be able to drive the 2SS rear deck speakers very well. B) Running the fronts and the 2SS rear deck speakers in parallel will half the power to the fronts and to the rear deck so the fronts will be underpowered AND now the rear deck will be underpowered for a completely underwhelming listening experience.
The short answer is that yes it can be done but, it's going to sound like shit. You would also end up having to run extra wiring and splice into existing wiring. All that effort in order to make your system sound worse. Or, you can just spend the time and money and do it right and actually improve the sound quality. Most people would suggest you simply add an amp and sub to a 1SS and you'll then have a pretty decent sounding system. It really comes down to what your ultimate goal is.

And actually the 2ss has bose speakers which are 2 ohm. So final impedance of the parallel configuration would be 1.33 ohms. Guaranteed to cook the amp. |

After reading the replies to my post, I figured, nothing ventured,......
First, I am NOT an audiophile, but I like a certain range of frequencies when I listen to the radio. The system in the 1SS is ok, but to me just needed a little more bass. I went ahead and got a pair of the 2SS rear deck speakers to install in my 1SS. First, no way to install ON the rear deck from inside the car, so I looked at installing the speakers UP into the rear deck from the trunk. Had to tweak the opening in three spots (didn't cut the sheet metal - just folded it over). Speaker then fit up into the opening; used license plate type plastic nuts to fit into the two square holes toward the front. Used a self drilling/tapping screw for the third mount toward the rear. A ring of foam around the speaker, and installed nice and tight. Installed this way, it is about 3/16" lower than normal, but the speaker structure funnels all sound upward. The hardest part so far was cutting the foam insulation on the rear deck! Half inch thick and tough as leather.... Now, the wiring: I tapped into the rear speaker outputs, but as pointed out earlier, this parallel connection cuts the effective impedance to 1.33, dangerous for the amp. So I put two 6 ohm, 50 watt resistors in parallel, then put them in series with the positive output to the speakers. I figure this gives me impedance of about 4.3 ohms, which should be ok. Hooked it up, and tried it out - works great! At least, I'm happy with the sound. The two speakers wake up the base system and for me, was well worth the afternoon it took to install. |

Could you snap a few pics of how you mounted them? I am thinking of getting a small amp and put in some 6x9's to give it a little extra

Your amp which was powering 2 speakers is now powering 4 plus the loss through the resistors. So your MAXIMUM system volume for those speakers is now much lower. Also these 4 speakers will have lower output relative to the other system speakers at any given volume setting. You may be able to compensate for this using the tone and fader controls. |

I really wanted to do something like this. I really wanted to just put some 6x9s back there to get a fuller sound, and not take up trunk space (and also add the least amount of weight to the car) but I don't have much free time at all. Back in the day I would have.
But now I think I'm going to keep it simple as possible, and eventually I'll drop in this amp/sub box combo: https://www.amazon.com/Rockford-Fosg...osgate+P300-10 This plus the 1SS harness from Sub Thump should make it easy. If I need trunk space, it would be a simple one minute deal to pull it back out.
