The First Two Firebirds are Found and Restored

Not a Camaro, but close.

Just found this story in my email.

https://myclassicgarage.com/social/p...mpaign=14email

The TV show "Fast N' Loud" host Richard Rawlings says he has found what the industry calls the "Holy Grail" - the first two Pontiac Firebirds ever built.

Simply called "#1" and "#2," the prototypes were produced by Pontiac engineers for testing and to determine if they were to be mass produced.

cool they were found, but technically not lost.

not overly cool that GasMonkey got their hands on them...I hope they did what they are supposed to do with these and NOT make a traditional Gas Monkey car out of them...or even do anything that Gas Monkey would do to ANY car.

Exactly, Aas Monkey single cheeks too many cars. How someone would hand over these cars to them makes me kind of sick to my stomach.

Not sure who in the industry is calling this the "holy grail" - that is hype. Finding a Hemi Cuda ragtop, any Hemi Cuda ragtop (let alone the first one) trumps this find. For non-muscle, there are many documented Bugatti, Ferrari, etc. finds that trump this.

I dont know. I dont buy the story of them being prototypes. Could they be the first 2 mass produced? That sounds more plausible.

The fact that they are documented as 1 and 2 do make them an important find. As far as value goes..not really,..but from a historic perpective they are important to the classic car industry.

Actually if that is the one they restored, either they tried to use Camaro parts or this was actually a prototype.
Check out this picture of an actual 67 Firebird Convertible. Notice it has "Gills" on the rear quarter panel just behind the door. Also the front bumper is different. And it looks like on the prototype it is grafted on the Camaro nose. The bumper does not match up well with the front fender. Then again the bumper may be warped and it could just be more of their half assed work.... I can't see anyone paying $650K for something so unfinished looking.

Those were different times when an ordinary person could get #1 and #2 off the lines. Can't do that today unless you are Rick Hendrick.

Personally, I hope it is NOT one of those Ponchos. Because if it is, aftermarket wheels have no place in a correct "restoration" for a museum, even a prototype's restoration. Those are not the correct wheels for that car, what else did they do incorrectly? If that's one of the prototypes, the car has been turned into a custom, not restored. Prototypes from that era are very hard to restore correctly but it absolutely has been done. Here's a "one of none" car: the 1970 Buick GSX prototype, which was 100% DOT legal when made and was restored to original condition as it appeared in the 1970 show car circuit, at great effort:
