They should have bought a Z/28

Ouch. That's gotta leave a mark . . . .

Aside from the thrown rods, also problems with thermostat sticking, faulty cam angle sensors, and rear-wheel steering.

All the Porsches I've owned were maintenance money pits. The reality does not match the marketing hype, that I can assure anyone.

The less parts there are, the less there is to break, so I'm looking forward to that aspect of Z/28 ownership.

Plus, as a real man I do my own shifting with beautiful heel-toe rev-matched downshifts

Hammon on Top Gear U.K is catching a lot of greif from his co-hosts because of this issue. He bought one of the new GT3s. Almost as soon as he got the car Porsche contacted him and told him not to drive the car. He's supposedly driving around in a rental. Though I don't know about the rental part. I know he owns other cars.

You've got the ad campaign right there. GT3 owner, standing in front of the smoking remnants of his car, smacks his forehead with the palm of his right hand...

"Wow -- I could've had a V8!!!"

Sounds like good customer service to me. Replacing all of the engines after only two incidents is pretty on the ball considering what is going on with some of the big manufacturer recalls right now. How many 458s burned to the ground before Ferrari acted?

If you read between the lines, it sounds like this problem would happen at a very high rate, it is just a matter of time. At the end of the day, an accountant somewhere determined that the cost of fires in a certain amount of cars would be higher than replacing all the engines. That is not good customer service, it is good for their bottom line.

An accountant may have provided data on costs, but someone much higher up the food chain made the decision to take the risk of not replacing engines.
